The 1920's were an age of dramatic social and political change. For the first time, more Americans lived in cities than on farms. The nation’s total wealth more than doubled between 1920 and 1929, and this economic growth swept many Americans into an unfamiliar “consumer society.” a consumer society is a society in which the buying and selling of goods and services is the most important social and economic activity. people were getting more used to the idea of being "materialistic" in this time period.

The most familiar symbol of the “Roaring Twenties” is probably the flapper: a young woman with bobbed hair and short skirts who drank, smoked and said what might be termed “unladylike” things, in addition to being more sexually “free” than previous generations. In reality, most young women in the 1920's did none of these things (though many did adopt a fashionable flapper wardrobe), but even those women who were not flappers gained some unprecedented freedoms. They could vote at last: The 19th amendment had guaranteed that right in 1920. Also, during this time period Prohibition was present, which in my opinion made people want to drink more. Also, a lot of people had a huge hobby of going to the movie theater, because we finally had more money to spend and the Jazz Age happened during this time.

Woodrow Wilson was president during this time period. He oversaw the prohibition amendment. With the end of World War I and the passage of the eighteenth amendment (aka prohibition), Americans entered the distinctive 1920's — an era of Republican leadership, nationalistic and fundamentalist movements, and changing social conventions. Electing Republican presidents who favored business expansion rather than regulation, the American public enjoyed apparently unlimited prosperity, while fearing foreigners combined to almost completely close off America to immigration and contributed to the resurgence of hate groups such as the Ku Klux Klan.

one economic characteristic of the 1920's that will lead to trouble in the US

I feel that the mindset of being a consumer society really affected future generations. During this time, people started getting really used to the idea of having anything they wanted. People wanted more than everyone else had. This is when people started getting the idea of being materialistic, and replacing things they used to value with things they could buy. People were super free with their money and were later in for a rude awakening when they found that you can't just be free with your money because you have a limited amount, and you could lose it all in a second.
