Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in genoa. When he was a kid he read about a travel named Marco Polo. Columbus wanted to see faraway lands. So when he was 14 he became sailor. He traveled south along the coast of Africa and north to Ireland. He many have gone to Iceland. Viking sailors had already explored Greenland and the eastern canadian shores. But Columbus and others did not know about these voyages. He believed the Earth was smaller than it is and that there is only one ocean. He thought it would be faster to get to Asia if he went sailing west across the Atlantic. He asked the king of portugal to pay for his trip and the king said no. It took almost 13 years but he got queen isabella and king Ferdinand to help him. They gave him around 90 men and three ships. He promised bring back riches for Spain. On August 3,1492 he left along with him were three ships and the Nina, the Pinta and the santa Maria. The first voyage was from Spain to Cuba and back. The second voyage was from Spain to more islands near Cuba.  The second voyage was at Hispaniola. The third was from Sanucar to Spain. The fourth voyage is the coasts of Central and South America.
