Initial thoughts: Great idea. Thought we should have a framework every since I saw the paramedic career pathway.
One concern re-terminology. Framework suggests Advanced ODPs are a level below Specialist ODPs, this is the wrong way round. Advanced ODPs/ODPs in Advanced Roles study at academic level 7. Surgical First Assistant is an extended scope of practice achieved with level 6 study. It is not an advanced role. Advanced roles include SCP, PA(A) and ACP. They all require a minimum of 2yrs post-grad education at level 7 whereas SFA is a 30 credit module at level 6. Have Senior/Specialist ODP at level 6 with Advanced ODP at level 7. Also, Advanced ODPs span all 4 pillars of Advanced Practice: Education, Leadership, Clinical Expertise and Research, would be good to reflect that in the diagram , at present they are listed under Clinical Expertise.
Great work so far, well done.
Sarah Anderson (Trainee ACP, ODP, MSc Student & Student SFA)
THANK YOU (from Helen)

Is the suggestion that leadership roles only occur in theatre - I think that the leadership ones should be generic - increasingly ODPs are doing senior / divisional leadership roles or even regional

I’m guessing education ones are academic ones in HEI though of course university banding is separate and doesn’t Align toA4c

Band 8 is actually 4 band 8a -d and what about band 9 ?? After 7 years as an ODP & a back injury which gives me pain all the time now I'd jump at the chance of a research job. I've yet to come across a Research ODP but if you are out there please let me know how you got into it!
Unfortunately what you get told as a student regarding job opportunities post-qualification can prove disappointing in reality.

Overall a great framework that is definitely needed for the profession.
Two areas of concern for me are:
1 - Why does a senior ODP need to be educated to level 7? The course is level 6 and very little opportunity exisists in the NHS to complete a funded level 7 course. This could also discriminate against those already in the role that have been doing it for years and may be C&G or NVQ qualified.
2 - ODP isn't limited to theatres, although I appreciate most roles are based here. Introducing a framework that looks as if it supports the idea an ODP can only progress into senior roles in theatre could be damaging for those of us that work out of the perioperative arena and also inhibit the development of further roles. I'm a band 7 lead practitioner and haven't worked in theatre for 3 years!
