It is unfamiliar and they do not feel comfortable navigating it. In one district, I witnessed fourth graders practicing typing essays because they would be required to type their essays at the end of year testing. However, they were only attending typing class once a week. The school was on the right track by having the students practice writing essays, but they needed more practice with the skill of typing. At my Alma Mater, each student is given a Chromebook to complete their assignments. Kindergarten students have advantages because they are able to learn how to take these tests online, where as kids who have not had to do poorly because until the law was passed they had no access or preparation to take the standardized tests online. My cousin teaches Kindergarten and she has laptops, iPads, iPods, a SMART Board, etc. in her classroom. If students are in a classroom that barely has technology, they will have a hard time using a computer. At my kids school, in kindergarten, they start going to the computer lab for an hour once a week and they all have computers in their classes that they use for various things.
