I break down and scaffold the reading to help students access the meaning. I might have them highlight certain elements, or answer specific questions about certain things that I want to draw attention to. I know that they have mastered the skill when they can do creative projects connected to the reading. For example, if they can rewrite a scene as a comic strip with their own original dialogue, I know that they understand that scene. If they can create a fake social media profile for a character, I know that they deeply understand how that character presents him/herself, and his/her motivations.
