I might have them highlight certain elements, or answer specific questions about certain things that I want to draw attention to. I know that they have mastered the skill when they can do creative projects connected to the reading. For example, if they can rewrite a scene as a comic strip with their own original dialogue, I know that they understand that scene. Annotations are turned in and analyzed before giving a completion grade. We then discuss close readings and do them as a class.

My students are not as strong writers as I would like.
