She was really into this because she used it as an outlet for her love of nature (she was really interested in nature and the arts). When her Jewish friends weren't allowed to join the League of German Girls, Sophie left because she was uncomfortable and unhappy with the Nazi ideals. 
She attended the same university as her brother and his friends. While there, they formed The White Rose, an anti-nazi/anti-war protest group.
