The Minamata Disease happened in 1956 from a Chemical plant releasing methylmercury into Minamata Bay and into the Shiranui Sea, causing small organisms to ingest large amounts of mercury. Every fish that ate another fish with mercury in it continued the chain, eventually leading to bigger fish that humans eat. After eating a fish with mercury in it, the person would have hearing and speech issues, overall muscle weakness, and numbness; and in the more extreme cases, insanity, paralysis, and even death. The event lasted over 30 years because of the company lying about treating its wastewater. The pollution started in 1932, but the poisoning started in 1956 and ended around 1969. Victims who got it still have its effects today.

The chemical plant called Chisso was responsible for over a quarter of the jobs in Minamata. After the disease outbreak, Chisso had to pay large sums of money to victims. The contamination of the bay led to fishing profit and numbers dropping hugely.

The factory's methylmercury dumping into the bay led to mercury settling on the seabed, which small organisms would consume, then small fishes would eat that organism, starting a mercury contamination chain when fish ate other fish with mercury poisoning. The plant installed a "waste treatment plant" that in reality did nothing to clen the waste. Mercury poisoning could be spread though any land creature that ate fish. Many land animals got mercury poisoning by eating food in people's trash. The mercury output of the plant lead to many long term effects like contamination of the Minamata Bay, and Shiranui Sea.

The pollution over ~30 years lead to many fish on earth having some level of mercury in them, which means that eating fish from areas were a plant is/was can lead to you increasing your mercury levels and can be unhealthy. This also made many areas around Japan unusable for fishing for several years, but has since changed.
