1. The standard published reading diary. Given to all pupils. Signed and returned by few. Weekly assemblies congratulating classes and reading out home reading percentages. 2. Researched into the impact of giving children their own choice and how choice can positively impact engagement. All pupils now given a standard A4 workbook which they can change into Reading Scrapbook- with a traditional signing page for families who wanted to record reading. Initially very positive response. 3. With pupils attending online learning, it was time to rethink. Welcome to the world of TEAMS and an Online Reading Journal. Created each week, multiple choice questions and areas for pupils/parents to comment. Also the opportunity for parents to add photos and videos. Sounds great. Was great. However, needed to be completely remade each week due to technical issues. Seemed to work well for some families, other families had so many technical issues and took so long to upload that they stopped using it. Began to feel like I was chasing people to complete it. Did I really want to be the Reading Police? There had to be a better way that reduced workload for staff, made it easy for pupils and families. 4. Back to the drawing board. What to do when rethinking? Ask the pupils of course. What do you like to do? As expected, gaming YouTube etc was high priority. There must be something we can use here to entice the pupils to read at home. But, it would take a shift in mindsets of the community at school and locally. That's where I introduced the Reading Diet. At School we will offer... Remotely we will offer... Using TEAMS again, I was able to design and create weekly assignments for the parents of pupils to upload videos or preferably audio recordings, of their child reading for 2 minutes. Easy to upload. Can add as many recordings as they wish. Shared as a class on a Friday to celebrate. But what about those who can't do it at home? Simple- set up an Ipad in a safe area and pupils record themselves during the school day. These videos are a great way to document progress, fluency and accuracy.
