Differentiated instruction (DI) is the ability to create instructions for students in ways that they can all understand and accomplish. This process may be hard as there are many different types of learners and each learn best in their own way.

Assistive Technology (AT)

AT stands for assistive technology. Assistive technology is using electronics and other tools to ensure students with disabilities can communicate and complete tasks. Assistive technology can be used by students with different disabilities as they each require help in different ways.

There are many different examples of differentiate instruction based on what type of learner your students are. For auditory learners they should do tasks such as listening to a lecture or an audio book. Visual learners should learn by watching videos or using graphs. They can also have an example of what you want them to do so they can see the formatting. Students who learn by reading and writing should have written instructions and have the ability to high light, underline, and take notes. Kinesthetic learners can do interactive assignments and presentations.

An example of an assistive technology would be a text to speech system. This can be used for students who choose not to talk or are vocally challenged to be able to type out or press a button to communicate with someone. A students who uses a text to speech system might not have another easier way to communicate an emergency or a simple sentence without a text to speech system. A student who is in a wheelchair and non verbal might use their text to speech system to tell someone they have to use the restroom. Without a text to speech system they would either be waiting or have to communicate by writing out their needs.

Importance of DI

Differential instruction is extremely important to be knowledgeable on as teachers as some of our students may learn best from these practices. Just like some students learn best by visual representations or an oral lecture some students may learn best by being taught using differential instructions.

Assistive technology is vital for future teachers to learn about. We want to be inclusive to all students and a way of being inclusive is knowing the different types of machines or tools students need to learn the best. With these new ideas we can be able to help students fully participate in their educational careers.
