Whether it’s your own natural ups and downs, a friend’s losing battle to mental health, your dog’s mood swings, or just a poster at school, mental health is present in everyone. One of the things I found that helps me best when I find my mental health at a low is taking a walk and exploring new things. I often lose myself in the pursuit of uncharted territory or a spot no one has been to set up a hammock. This passion of mine has sparked the creativity for this project, as I take you on one of my journeys with my girlfriend, best friend, and best friend’s girlfriend. This trip was up to Taylors Falls for an exploration of the woods up there as well as a brief visit into their town to enter and exit the park. The overall theme of this walk is definitely set in the wilderness and is all about the journey. I take you from where we start, on the well beaten path, to where we find ourselves lost and happy. From there we mess around, doing such things as posing on boulders and skipping rocks; then transition into where we finally exit after a long day of untouched wilderness and sore smiles. Some of the pictures i’m especially proud of, not that i’m disappointed in any of them, show some of the true beauty in the wilderness using qualities learned in class. We start the project with an extremely linear photo, with all lines seeming to lead to a point in the distant road. Further down a winding road, we find a stream between the steps where I use focus to really make the water pop and you see the true reflection of the tiny river. Once off the usual trails, we find an unexplored area to set up hammocks and to rest our bags and snacks. Looking around the beautiful scenes, we find a riverbed and a small rock beach to go explore. Finding the steps down, we decided to go explore some more. Using black and white, I found my second favorite photo where my best friend skipped rocks and I timed the capture perfectly. After taking a rest on some boulders overlooking the river, I captured my favorite photo of the cliffside facing us across the massive river. This is my favorite photo due to the intense use of natural parallel lines and lighting from the sunset. We ended up leaving after finding some stone steps and exiting through a small neighborhood. This trip made me only want to take more as now I have a new crew to explore with. The camera will only get more use :).
