Deviance is where behavior which goes against society's accepted norms and values. Deviance can question morality and the complex and sometimes conflicting moral dilemmas. Deviance is sport will include gamesmanship and cheating. In my personal opinion on deviance is that pushing the rules which is gamesmanship has now become more acceptable within sport especially in football when players surround the referee and attempting to influence their decision.

Sportsmanship is how sports people should act. It can be defined as playing fair and within both the written and unwritten rules of the sport. The underpinned and good etiquette respect for all . Etiquette is a code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group.

USA Gymnastics Abuse scandal

The USA gymnastic abuse scandal is where the former USA gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar has abused around 265 girls. At least 65 victims are set to confront NAssar,54, in court in the last of the 3 sentencing hearings.
He was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison after nearly 160 women testified against him that he had insulated or abused. His victims included Olympic gold medal winners Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber. What is more shocking is that Nassar was already serving 60 years in prison for possession of child sex abuse images. At first the court was sitting to sentence him for molesting patiuents in the back room of Twistars gymnastics club in Dimondale, Michigan.
The former Michigan State Univeriosty physician had pleaded guilty in November to 3 counts of 1st degree criminal sexual conduct agianst the girls who he was there to provide midical care. One of teh most shocking facts is that at least 1 of the sexual assualts included a victim who was younger than 13. At least 2 of the victims were abused at 15 or 16 years old.
Judge Janice Cunningham told the small court in charlotte, michigan that: "We have over 265 identified victims and infinite number of victims in the state, in the country and all individuals are able to participate in this process."

The first person to speak out was 17 year old Jessica Thomashow, who told the court "He first molested me when i was 9(...) before i had braces, and when I stilled played with my American Girl dolls." She continued saying "Larry Nassar preyed on us for his own pleasure, leaving in his wake traumatized and broken girls." She described him as "Evil" and "a criminal of the worst kind
I find that this is a quite shocking statement for Jessica to say within court she was brave. She was brave to be the first person to speak out about the abuse. Ms Thomashow's older sister was also abused by Nassar while studying at MSU. In this final sentencing, a minimum of 25 to 40 years was expected to be added to Nassar's current prison sentence.

The hearing was scheduled to last 3 days as women line up to deliver victim-impact testimony. USA Gymnastics says every director of its board has now resigned in the wake of the scandal.
The USA Olympic committee demanded the board to step down by Wednesday or face losing its governing authority. "We are in the process of moving forward with forming an interim board of directors during the month of February" said a statements by USA Gymnastics.
In my opinion when an entire board of dircetors have stepped down then does it mean that they know about what Nassar was doing and did they cover it up?
About 140 victims are suing Nassar, USA Gymnastics and MSU's, seeking monetary damages from institutions they accuse of ignoring the allegations.
Michigan's attorney general has launched a criminal investigation into MSU. The college's president and top sports official resigned last week following Nassar's sentencing.
There were protests that erupted among students and faculty after MSU's board unanimously appointed former governor John Engler to serve as interim president. Several students and facility members said they were blindsided by the choice and were not asked for input.

The importance of a whistle blower

The first person to speak out was 17 year old Jessica Thomashow. Why is this important? I think that Jessica speaking out was the most important thing because if she hadn't Nassar would have got of way with what he did to so many young girls. It also important for Jessica to be the first to speak out as she would have found that repeating what had happen to her years ago would have been one of the hardest things she had to do. When Jessica spoke out this would have inspired other girls who had been abused by Nassar, to come and speak up about what he did to them at such a young age. Jessica speaking out helped to sentence Nassar and helped more girls get justice for their traumatized lives.
It also allowed the national governing body to further investigate the allegations and there action was that the entire board of directors resigned due to the scandal. It also shows that this may have been a cover- up by the directors g=due to them all resigning at the same time which suggest they may have known about this scandal or the allegations which they didn't take action against.

What can NGB's learn from this?

Sports NGB's can learn that there may be allegations that are made and if they aren't acted upon then it could be worse for the national governing bodies if they aren't acted upon. Also if they will know how to deal with any allegations taht might be made be taking them serious and investigating on them. They could also learn that at the first person to raise the allegations it may have been a hard decision as they may have been abused and traumatized.
