The primary duty of the 101st was to parachute behind enemy lines and attack positions to clear way for other divisions like the Infantry. The 101st fought in Normandy for D-day, the battle of Carentan, Holland for Operation Market Garden, Belgium for both Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge, and later occupied parts of Germany. They fought with pride and tenacity, and were commonly surrounded by enemy forces due to them parachuting behind enemy lines. They were successful in all of the battles they fought in except for Operation Market Garden.

The 101st Airborne were reffered to as the "Screaming Eagles". This is because the 101st was originally a reserve unit from Wisconsin during the civil war, with their mascot being an eagle called "Old Abe". The eagle represents the bravery and courage the airborne faces in the war, and like the eagle, they come in flying.

The Insignia of the 101st is an eagle, and is an eagle because of the 101st divisions mascot being an eagle back in the civil war, so that is the insignia used today. It fit the 101st because it represented the way they fought, with courage and determination, like what an eagle symbolizes.

Leaders of the 101st include Major General William Lee, Brig. General Maxwell Taylor, and Brig. Gen. Anthony C. McAuliffe. William Lee was the first leader, but suffered a heart attack during the war and was replaced by Taylor. Taylor stayed as leader until the end of the war. One key quality of leadership demonstrated was during the battle of the bulge, when american soldier's morale was at an all time low, and death was everywhere, allied commander faced an ulitimatum by attacking German forces, asking them to surrender. He replied, "Nuts!" which sent a boost to morale and showed bravery and confidence that helped every solider during tough times.
