Orwell's purpose through Syme:
Through Syme, Orwell aims to show the perspective of someone who was blindly but intelligently devoted to the Party. Syme personified the devoted intellectual loyal to the Party, but Orwell also wanted to show the irony behind his devotion as leading him to his vaporisation, as his intelligence was a threat to the very Party he staunchly supported.

-For some people it is enough just to engage in small rebellions, and so for a society like Oceania, the people might never act against the Party on a mass scale as they prefer to live simply for their own personal desires.
-Compare to other characters to show stark differences in personality even in a world where people's individualism is attempted to be controlled. As well as the many different ways people can rebel, like Julia who does so physically, compared to Winston who decides to rebel with his intelligence and knowledge (journaling, etc). It highlights the power of the Party to stop the thoughts and actions of all the different types of indivdiuals (that don't align with party lines)

At the beginning of the novel, Winston was a "smallish, frail figure, the meagreness of his body merely emphasised by the blue overalls", however after being in prison, he was "growing fatter and stronger everyday". Winston's hair was "very fair, his face naturally sanguine". Winston had a "varicose ulcer above his right ankle". 

Personality attributes
Winston is very reflective and often tried to "think his way backward into the dim period of his early childhood". This highlighted his rebellious nature, which was often hidden behind his "naturally sanguine" expression. In his diary he expresses his determination when he writes "they'll shoot me, I don't care... down with Big Brother". 

Author's purpose
- Through Winston's ulcer, Orwell demonstrates his hidden humanity. The ulcer improved when he was with Julia, highlighting how he no longer had to suppress his emotions and feelings. 
- Orwell explores the idea of freedom, through Winston and Julia's secret relationship.
