She later explains what it felt like when her mom died. At the end of the excerpt, doors come up a lot. Her and her friend reach the top and come to a set of doors, one for each of them. Her friend Julia has no problem reaching for her door and stepping inside. But Clare on the other hand can’t seem to open her door. The door represents starting over for Clare without her mom and trying to accept that she is gone. Group members: Monet C and Kendal A.

When Clare and Julia find the ladders in the woods they decided not to tell their parents. Clare wants to tell her parents, but Julia does not. This is also shown when Julia is ahead of Clare on the ladders. Clare wants more time to mourn her mothers death. It takes more courage for Clare to walk through the door than it did Julia. Julia is reading to move on and become older.
Group members: Charlotte Bridier, Mallory Manganaro

These clouds in the story are relating to the towers, that are showing new things that are happening. When new things happen there are new ideas. Another part in the story it mentions lights and clouds. Lights can be a symbol for new ideas which also relate to the clouds. In the story if things are not going so good and the people are sad than maybe the clouds will start raining, or if happy things are going on in the story than there will be sun and blue skies.

A main theme in The Ascent is moving on. In The Ascent, ladders are referenced a lot. The narrator is hesitant to climb the ladder, she doesn’t want to let go of her past life and the thought of her mother, even if it’s weighing her down. The ladders could represent leaving the past behind and moving forward with life, and the process of moving on. The clouds and mist could represent not looking back, because they limit your view from looking to the ground, like how it would limit you from thinking about a painful past. Lastly, the doorknobs, doors and the towers could represent finally moving on, the tower is the new mind of your, strengthened with brick and mortar to stop you from thinking about the past and letting those feelings get to you. The doorknobs and doors represent entering this new phase of life, fully letting go of the past and the painful feelings that are associated with your old life, and finally entering your new life with a strong mind to cut off the trauma you formerly had.

#2 Being Lost
The second main theme is being lost. This theme is represented by the compass that can’t point north. This compass can’t point north, because the narrator’s north (her mom) is gone. The compass is broken like how her heart and mind is broken and in pain because she had to deal with losing her mother.

Extra
There’s dialogue where the narrator and her friend are exchanging a conversation. Her friend asks if she’s okay, and the narrator replies that she isn’t, and then her friend says she’s gonna be ok.

Though this dialogue can be about climbing the ladders, it can be interpreted as her friend saying she’s be okay after her mom died.

Group Members: Charlie Rowe, Sam Williams, James Austin

Something to back this up is that our main character is trying to move further from the ground Just like she is trying to move away from memories of her mother. The main character also tries not to look down, because the ground represents her mother being far away. Finally the main character says that the ground is just a memory just like her mother is just a memory. - Lucas, luca, Emerson

Clare’s mother has passed away and Clare has to learn how to move on. Clare is really scared to move on, this parallels how Clare is scared to open the door because she does not know what will happen if she takes that chance. She is also afraid that the door knob will burn her even though it is cool to the tough. This mirrors her hesitancy to move past her mother’s passing because she afraid it will end up hurting her, even though it is healthy. She ends up not opening the door because her anxiety stops her. This represents how she is not emotionally ready for the next stage in her life.

When Clare is happy it is because her north (mom) is there and alive. Now her north (her mom) is gone and her happiness is gone as well, like a dismembered compass.

Group Members: Ben Holland and Jonah Nordin

In the story the Ascent a large part of the story that is described in great detail is the ground. The ground represents the thoughts of her dead Mom. The story says the the ground is just a memory now, just like her Mom. Clare, the protagonist, also leaves the ground behind just like she tries to push away the thought of her Mom. She wants to move on and leave them behind.
Group Members: Seth, Will, Alden and Harrison

The symbols are: exited, scared, worried, conscious, nervous, brave, and fearless.

The main theme of The Ascent is grief. I think this because Clare climbing up ladders symbolizes her going through grief. I know it’s grief because Clare mentions her mom and quotes her a lot throughout the story. She also mentions she is lost without her mom and she is also lost on the ladder. I think that when she reaches the top and goes through the door that symbolizes her getting over grief, but she can’t get over it and is scared to.

The main themes in the story “The Ascent” are Possibility/New Beginnings. A symbol that stands for Possibility/New Beginnings is the Door. When they’re climbing, the doors, like new beginnings seem hard and impossible to reach. When Julia and Clare reach the top of the ladders, they need to open the doors to continue their journey. Julia is able to step through the door and continue a new adventure. Clare, like many people, wasn’t able to move on and start something new.
Group members: Juniper Mahnke and Evelyn Yu

A main theme in this story, the ascent, was success. The theme was success because one of the friends was up the ladder farther and was fearless while the other friend staggered behind . The success was at the top of the ladder. The climb was the journey. Som of the symbols were the ladder which represented their journey to success. Another symbol was the fog/cloud. The fog/clouds represented the bad things/obstacles in the way of their success. They also represented bad things that are unclear of when or what will happen. Also, the ground stood for their past life.

In “the Ascent” the main theme we saw was getting over your fears. Clare looked down, and was scared because of high up she was. Julia warned not to look down but she did anyway, she then panicked but Julia helped her get over her fear. She also was constantly reminded of her mother, who recently passed. She was anxious, and probably somewhat hopeful about seeing her mother in the tower, although she knew that she wouldn’t see her. They both saw the ladders as a way to escape the real world. When they were climbing, all of the real world problems vanished and they just focused of climbing, only when Clare looked down is when she got worried. group members: annie and eliza

In the story The Acent ladder is a main object that comes upon repeatedly. Our group has agreed that. The ladder represents life, in life you may not want to go on but people in your life keep you going as in this story. Also the determination of the main character is the same as in life, you need determination to go through life.

We think that the ladders in the Ascent represent the protagonist, Clare, moving on from her mother’s passing. For example, as they climb up the ladders, Clare tries harder and harder to forget about her mother. However, once the ladders are gone and she reaches the top, she starts thinking about her mother again and feels guilty. Also, when Clare is climbing, the higher she gets the farther away she is from thinking about her mother. Overall, the ladders in The Ascent represent Clare moving forward from her past and her mother. Alex Jose, Jane Boardman, and Grace Rich
