GOLD- Hernando de Soto went on an expedition to North America in search of riches because de Vaca had allegedly found lots of riches there.

COMPARE/CONTRAST Francisco Vázquez de Coronado had a similar expedition. He went to the southwestern US in search of the Seven Golden Cities which supposedly had many riches. The difference from Hernando’s expedition was the Seven Golden CIties was a myth and there was no gold.

GLORY- Hernando de Soto went on an expedition to Peru to conquer Cuzco which is the capital of Peru’s Incan Empire.

COMPARE/CONTRAST- On Francisco's expedition him and his crew clashed violently with local native indians. They ended up in a battle over the land. Francisco wanted to return to Mexico with new found land that he now owned, but unlike Hernando he lost the battle and gained no land.

When Hernando de Soto and his men headed south near Alabama a group of Indians attacked them. In this battle the Spaniards suffered many casualties but not nearly as many as the Indians. They wiped out over a quarter of their tribe and they were forced to leave this area. A similar thing happened on the Silk Road. The Battle of Talas between Arab Abbasid Caliphate, the Tibetan Empire, and the Chinese Tang dynasty. In this battle the Chinese Tang dynasty was nearly wiped out and they no longer traveled the Silk Road.
Soto and his men headed westward and they discovered the Mississippi river. This was the first time a European had traveled via the Mississippi river. This lead to maps being changed because the new land discovery. The purpose of this exploration was to discover new things and conquer new places where as the Silk Road’s purpose was to trade and exchange.
After the discovery of the river people found many ways to use it for their benefit. People would transport their goods and they would use it to travel. With the constant migration languages, ideas, and cultures were shared and spread. In the Silk Road people traveled all over causing there to be lots of exchanging ideas, languages, cultures, technology, and more.

Primary Source 1- Hernando
De Soto’s letter to the Justice and Board of Magistrates in Santiago de Cuba.
Primary Source 2- Hernando
“Although we pursued them, they could not be overtaken. For the many obstructions in our way. This will not stop me, it will only stimulate me.” -Hernando de Soto
Primary Source 1- Roald
Letter written to Admiral Lyon to thank him for allowing Amundsen to use his ship.
Primary Source 2- Roald
“I may say that this is the greatest factor: the way in which the expedition is equipped, the way in which every difficulty is foreseen, and precautions taken for meeting or avoiding it. Victory awaits him who has everything in order, luck, people call it. Defeat is certain for him who has neglected to take the necessary precautions in time, this is called bad luck.” ― Roald Amundsen
Extends:Compare and contrast these 2 primary sources with 2 other primary sources from a different time period:Hernando’s letter is similar to Amundsen's letter because both are written to the person that allowed them to go on their expedition. They’re different because Hernando’s is a letter telling the King about everything he has accomplished and Amundsen’s letter was written to thank the Admiral.
Hernando’s quote is similar to Amundsen’s quote because they both talk about never giving up even when you have an obstacle in the way. They’re different because Amundsen talks about luck being a factor in achieving your goals and Hernando says you have to be the person to achieve it.

On Hernando de Soto’s expedition through North America he died from a fever and was buried in the river he discovered; the mississippi. In his will he named Luis de Moscoso Alvarado the new leader of his expedition. On this expedition they discovered the Panuco River in Mexico. When they returned to Spain and spread the news about this river people all over began to use it for fishing and finding food because it was filled with fish and animals. Today the Panuco River is used to drain Texoco and other interior lakes. This is done through a system of tunnels and channels. The waters are used to irrigate the fertile La Huasteca lowlands, and its lower course is navigable.
While they were in North America they used a tool known as the astrolabe. This allowed them to navigate latitude and measure the altitudes of celestial bodies. The natives saw this tool as a way to navigate and explore their land and the areas surrounding them. Today the astrolabe has been modified to be used for timekeeping, surveying, geography, and astronomy. The astrolabe has also helped design and be an inspiration for the GPS which is used every single day.

Astrolabe

Colonization is the taking over a certain area and staying there permanently. When people or countries colonize it can have huge effects on the native people. They take over their land which forces them to leave and find new land. They also bring new diseases with them and it effects the natives. Colonization can also cause deforestation and depletion of nutrients in the soil. Another effect is it can bring new power causing the economy to change.. In 1870-1900 Europe colonized much of Africa. Something that was different was the Africans wouldn’t just let the Europeans force them to leave. The Africans fought the Europeans but ended up losing and they left the land. The europeans did bring diseases such as measles and smallpox which affected many of the native Africans. Europe took over Africa for political, economical, and social reasons. Their main goal was to gain more power and they established colonial state systems. They did this to effective control over the colonized societies.
