Pennyroyal itself is a old stone traditional castle building with large rooms, and many different parts of it. There's corridors, barracks, and sections. One section is where the Princess cadets sleep. That is called a barrack. The other barrack is where the Knights slept. The barracks were a cozy room, including many wooden bunks with sconces lighting the room. It had much natural lighting as there were windows all around the room. Hallways were lined with smooth and polished obsidian and marble as well as long vines. Outside of the castle's barriers, enchanted forests stretched as far as the eye could see. For most days, gray clouds covered the sun and it seemed like you'd never see the sun again. Inside the castle's barriers, it started off with two twenty-foot statues, rising from a sparkling stone pool. Farther, the big castle came into appearance. Bright green grass covered where stone didn't. Evie starts off as a girl who didn't even know her name. As she was registering herself for the academy, she didn't know what to tell them when they asked for her name. They began to call her Cadet Eleven, and her friends soon call her Evie. But it's still not her real name. (you will learn it as you read the book) Anyway, Evie is super shy in the beginning of the book, and doesn't know anything about princesses. Everyone but Evie seems to know who Cinderella and Snow white are. This is because Evie had a hard childhood because her mom was always trying to convince her dad to give up on her. One day, she heard her mom saying those things, and thought her family would be better off without her so she ran away, and ended up and Pennyroyal with a boy who she didn't even know. Evie doesn't know anything and is a really quiet, clueless girl.      For example," 'What do you mean you could 'feel Father'? Where is he?'... 'I'm sorry, Sister,' said the dragon. 'I'm sorry.'
Evie's knees began to flutter. 'Father's...dead.' " This shows that Evie will take that sadness and use it to be motivated to win the battle, graduate from Pennyroyal, and do what's right, even if her dad did die.
     Next, "Evie's courage pulsed from her chest like the sun itself. 'I am not afraid! A ribbon of white lit up Hardcastle's eye, and that was when Evie saw it, and knew she had won. Fear." This supports the theme because it shows how Evie used courage to defeat Hardcastle, and that Evie was determined enough to put away her grieves, and win the battle.
     You can conclude that (even though you may have conflict, you can still achieve your goals.) is the theme of the book.

In this case, it's witches. When Evie lived with her dragon family, she was contained in a small and perfect world until she overheard her parents's conversation and decided to run away. This is when Evie makes her very first encounter with a witch. She hides in a small cabin to escape the alive forest until she finds out it is the house of a witch about to kill a boy named Remington. Luckily Evie narrowly escaped the forest just after she got her first experience of their powers. Once arriving at Pennyroyal, she quickly realizes what the Academy does. Train princesses to fight witches in the war. She accepts this fact and continues training. When the elections for the Grand Ball arrives, Evie is surprised to be chosen and finally feels just a little bit accepted. This doesn't last for long when she hears Malora's - her enemy and bully - piercing scream which then morphed into shouting and whining about how Evie is "unworthy". Although being comforted by Remington, the stares of the crowd and the depth of Malora's words drove out of the academy's barriers and into the dark and dangerous enchanted forest. After running as far as she can, she realizes that she is lost in a forest of living trees and dangerous witches. Right when she makes this realization, she gets approached by 3 shadowy figures lurking in the dark. Evie passes out and wakes up in a cabin strapped to a bed. The witches force feed her a metalic tasting green potion from a big cauldron and wait as "Sister" arrives at the door. She stares into Evie, making her feel completely worthless and weak. However, when they throw Evie's dragon scale into the cauldron she summons enough courage to escape with a burnt hand. After eventually making it back to Pennyroyal, she continues training and attends the Grand Ball but fails to win. Her training continues until the day of the Helpless Maiden. Evie and her friends split up but end up finding each other again after hearing the cackling of a witch. The witch fires an ice spell and hits Demetra while she was saving Evie. Maggie and Basil rush to find help while Evie is left alone, not knowing if the witch stayed, or followed her friends. She climbs up a tower to get a better view when she meets a very unexpected person. She ended up being a very powerful witch specifically ordered to not let Evie leave the Helpless Maiden alive. Through the battle, Evie experienced sorrow, fear, surprise, courage, and compassion. After a long and shifting battle, Evie had won. She thinks of the place as a place for shelter until she realizes the Academy specializes in training boys and girls into being princesses and knights destined to fight witches and dragons. She trains with other cadets to get stronger and wiser. Along the way, she encounters a witch, a "Sister" who had come to take her heart. She musters enough courage to escape and starts training harder than ever before. Evie develops a close relationship with Remington, her friends and starts to better understand Forbes. Eventually, the day of the Helpless Maiden arrives. She wanders through the forest and encounters a very unexpected and familiar witch. After a very emotionally straining battle, Evie scares the witch away. She wakes up in the infirmary after 2 days and proceeds to the graduation ceremony. After the surprisingly short speech, Evie watches as more and more of her friends ride of in carriages to get home.
