Ratliff starts off this chapter by talking about the repetitive motions that we go about in or everyday lives. He says, “We wake up, we go to work, we chop the onions, we wash the clothes, we pay the bill, and we make the deadlines”. It only makes sense that this repetitive motion in our lives carries over to our music. In this chapter Ratliff seems to talk about the concept of linking as music that doesn’t exactly fit the mold. He says on the first page of the chapter that, “It (music) does not have to be square or symmetrical or neatly sequential. There are other shapes and motions a musician or band or composer can make to achieve the condition of music...”. I definitely agree with his argument regarding this musical concept. Linking music seems to be music that does not stay within its regular parameters and that continues moving in many different directions.
