Innocence doesn't refer to just happiness or peacefulness; to me, it refers to a state of oblivion or blissful ignorance. After surviving on his own for so long, he will never be able to return to this state. He is still a kind, resourceful person, but he will never be able to forget these horrors.

Additionally, 'fire' could be a double-entendre that also refers to the meaningful quote from Vahan's father. Fire, or struggles you face, can forge a stronger person in its wake

Because suffering has such a negative connotation for the word being used. Pain, maybe, struggles, possibly, but suffering is saying that you need to go through something so difficult and challenging to grow just a little bit. For example, Vahan grew mentally after meeting Ara, but he didn't suffer there.
