Additionally since they can focus for longer their homework can be longer. Good time frame to teach self-regulation during reading because it is the beginning of their evaluation stages

The connecting age range is 11-14, so grade levels 6-8. Readers at this stage enjoy more complex readings with philosophical or abstract underpinnings, but in my experience, tend to focus a lot on character motivations and character's thoughts and plans. Essentially, they are entering the phase of making complex literary conclusions based on metaphors, tone, inferences, etc., and discussing these thoughts with others. Instructionally, students in this range can begin with what I think is one of the most fun parts of ELA: discussing their interpretations of complex textual themes. Books like The Giver represent this nicely I think - as the most accessible dystopian, The Giver helps kiddos move from "I don't think I'd like to live there" to answer more complex questions such as "what does the lack of color represent?" or "can a whole world operate in this way?"

Age range: 5-7

Grade levels: PreK-1st

Characteristics: Identify as readers. As time progresses they can go from books with simple patterns to pattern variation, they can read independently for short periods of time (5-10min) and love sharing books with others, will often read aloud. They know most letter sounds, can read simple words and some sight words They use both words and illustrations to make sense of the text. Lastly, they can retell the main idea of a story and can participate in whole group discussions. Kids may move quickly through this stage.

Instructional implications: Help students recognize patterns and word families to help them see the connections between similar words. Give students various group configuration experiences to read: whole class read aloud, partner, and individual. Each time students read, give them time to discuss their readings with others. Help students learn all letter sounds, and read more simple words and sight words (videos they can see, sing along and dance to are great for this).

Age range: 6-8

Grade levels: K-2nd

Characteristics: Transition to relying more on print than illustrations to make meaning. When they read aloud they understand basic punctuation and thus their expression may match the punctuation. Students read more challenging books that are longer, more complex illustrations, etc. and they love simple series. They begin to integrate reading strategies such as mean-making, sentence structure and phonic cues. Their silent independent reading game goes up to 10-15 minutes. They know more sight words and may correct miscues. With prompting and support they can discuss characters and events on top of retelling of the main idea. This stage may take kids longer to get through because of the wide range of text complexity.

Instructional implications: Provide a wide range of text complexity to support all students, wherever they are at this stage. Continue whole group, small group, partners, and independent reading. Follow up with discussion time (e.g. pair-share). Model the use of reading strategies during whole class instruction and encourage students to do the same as they read.
