He is the patron saint of Italy, as well as the animals and the environment. He was born from a rich family but chose to live a destitute life in order preach the gospel of our Lord. He founded the Orders of St. Francis and St. Clare, devout to the life of penitence and in the service of poor. In fact, they are noted for wearing only sandals even in winter.
