The Amish community was founded in 1693 by Jacob Amman. The name "Amish" was chose by the enemies of Jacob Amman.
In the 18th century, Amish people started migrating to the United States, more exactly to Pennsylvania, because of religious persecution by the Europeans kings.
In the middle of the 19th century, the Amish migrates to the Midwest. Then after a dispute between conservatives and progressives Amish, they separate in two groups:  the New Order and the Old Order.
Today, the first group have cars and use internet, electricity, the second group uses buggies, candles, they are farmers

Surprisingly, most of the Amish families don't use organic farming, they use intensive agriculture, pesticides and fertilizers. In fact, "save the planet" isn't their goal. But Amish farmers have many problems to do agriculture, because farms are very expensive. Do organic farming is too hard for them, because it's very expensive and not productive!
