I think this quote means that one man will look at a forest and say oh its just a bunch of trees and boring stuff and doesn't appreciate it even though it is probably older than him. Phillip became disheartened when the plane didn't com back for him.

When they heard the drone of the aircraft the new to light the signal fire.

Phillip and Timothy became stranded on the cay after the ship that they were on sank.

The cay  that Timothy and Phillip were on was surrounded by coral so that meant boats wouldn't go through there because it might damage the ballast of the ship.
