To raise money for government programs, they uses taxes. The textbook states, “By the middle of the twentieth century, the income tax was firmly entrenched as a large source of government revenue” (Democracy 20). The government protects their money, “The federal government imposes excise taxes to raise revenue or to protect domestic business and agriculture from foreign competition” (Democracy 20). They have a budget that helps them determine how much revenue they might get and how they plan to spend the money. Usually the government spends more money than they have, thus creating a budget deficit.

The Federal Reserve System uses monetary tools to regulate the nations money supply and moderate the effects of expansion and contraction in the economy. Taxes also help economic growth by getting money from the people. Much of the federal government's spending is mandatory spending. The remainder of the budget is discretionary spending. Major categories of government spending include entitlements, such as Social Security and Medicare, defense, and interest on the national debt.
