First of all, keep in mind what kind of look you want, and to do this, you have to keep in mind the proportions, pin sizes, tail sizes, the angles of the dovetails and joints and personally I don't like half tails or half pins, so I like to size them accordingly to my stock. Next is the layout. Using layout tools such as a marking knife or a marking gauge alongside a precision square, making kerfs and lines to guide the hand cut joint will be useful for the hand cutting portion of this process. Next, when cutting a dovetail joint, you can use tape to help guide the cutting. When cutting make sure to cut on the line so that the blade thickness takes off that 16th to make the joint fit. If the joints have the same dimension pin and holes, they will be very tight and might not fit, so cutting on that line mitigates clean up on the edges of the tails and pins. After the cuts are made, either use a coping saw or a chisel to remove the material. Once done, clean up the edges and make sure the corners are flush.

How can finish be applied? (2 mark)

Using a rag or a brush and use safety precautions as needed.

Explain why we need to properly space clamps with sacrificial blocks when clamping. (5 marks)

When clamping, the point is to join 2 pieces of wood using glue as an adhesive. The point of the glue is to emulate lignin if it was kiln dried in a sense as it hardens. The glue is applied, clamped and since liquids can’t be compressed, the greater clamping pressure will cause the glue to enter the wood and spread, and the pressure will hold it together and then the glue will set. To properly glue a piece together using clamping pressures, use blocks to properly distribute the clamping pressure. The clamp’s pressure is cone shaped, so if a 2’’ block for example is placed on each side of the wood being glued together, the cone’s projection will be larger thus there being more pressure applied to the glueing.
