This picture is important to my sense of self because it is my favourite picture of my dad and I. In Jasper my parents and I were spending the day walking through the park and we came across the lake in the picture. I think the good memories I have associated with the photo and Jasper as a whole really contributed to my appreciation of nature and sense of adventure. I love travelling and being able to explore new places; my parents taking me with them while they moved around for work really contributed to my passion.

Fun fact: Eight years later (2011) my family was on our way to the Northwest Territories when we decided to stop at Jasper for the day where we proceeded to adventure the nature trails once again, but we found another lake with a dock. My mom thought it would be a good idea to take another picture of my dad and I together on the dock, but we lost the photo so this is the only one left.

How would I describe Canada to someone who has never been here?

I would start by describing how different each part of Canada is travelling from coast to coast. There is always new to see or experience no matter if you have lived here your whole life or if you are just arriving. We have everything from deserts to mountains to beaches to lakes, but although the weather can be unpredictable depending on where you are in the country. Canada is absolutely beautiful and it is so diverse in both the landscapes and nature to the people who inhabit our country. We are a mosaic of people from countries all over the world and we are generally accepting of people no matter their culture, ethnicity, religion, etc. The people in Canada are polite, but not that exaggerated stereotype of us, we don't all play hockey, we don't live in igloos, and we don't have pet beavers. Tim Horton's is one of the best things in this country and if you don't have it once you are missing out on a live changing experience.

I have been in multiple provinces and territories in my lifetime such as Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Ontario, and British Colombia. I find that I identify myself with Alberta because my earliest memories of growing up are there and have spent most of my summers travelling around the province with my family and seeing what it has to offer. I especially feel as if Jasper National Park is a part of my identity because I have gone to through it multiple times and there is always a sense of adventure and excitement when I get to return, it's almost like a new experience every time. I have good memories of all my adventures visiting Jasper and connecting with nature in a really surreal way.
I also feel like my memories of visiting the Northwest Territories will always resonate with me because I spent an entire summer there and I would love to go there again.

The giant Toronto sign in the middle of the city centre

I find that Toronto as a city really defines Canada for me. Toronto is one of the most diverse and populated cities in Canada. In the city there is so many old preserved buildings, such as the old city hall and a old church behind the Eaton shopping centre that was first built when the settlers in Toronto settled there. In the middle of the city there is an old base from one of the wars. Toronto merges Canada' history, stories, events, and landmarks with it's more modern city life so that no matter where you are in the city you also get glimpses into our countries past mixed with what is now the present.

On the Europe trip in April we travelled to Berlin, Germany which was important to my sense of self. I have family history in Berlin and I was excited because I am the first person since my family immigrated to Canada to be back in Berlin! Apparently my seventh great grandfather owned a bank in Berlin and there was a street named after him and my great aunt asked me to try and find it while I was in Berlin. Unfortunately, I didn't find it, but it was amazing to visit the country my family originates from!

This helps me define Canada because we have unpredictable weather all of the time and you can't live here without being used to the weather changing a billion times a day. We can have snow one day, the next day it is 27 degrees and the snow is gone, and then the next day we are flooding. Therefore I put a Canadian meme because it made me laugh considering this was basically this week's weather.

This helps me define Canada because a big part of being in Canada is dealing with the unpredictable weather. Not only does the weather change at least ten times a day, across the country the weather is completely different. In parts of Canada is doesn't snow, where as in Saskatchewan we get snow for like 5 months out of the year. Part of Canada is its uncanny ability to be completely unpredictable.

According to my research my family and our last name originates from Eastern Germany and may be a habitational name of Slavic origin. Does the last name suit me? I personally think it does because both sides of my family immigrated from Germany. I was previously unaware of the Slavic portion of our history until I researched it, but looking at my family members it does make sense. My family is from Greece so it all makes sense on that side of the family, but not on the other. I think Froese suits my family and I quite well.

My proudest moment:

I think my most proud moment is when I got my first black belt. I was in grade eight and after several years of dedicating myself to taekwondo I was finally able to test for my first black belt. I tested in Saskatoon in front of our club's grandmaster, Grandmaster Ha, and I was very nervous. I tested and I did pretty good despite my nerves messing my test up a couple times. At the end my grandmaster announced that we all passed the test and we were all relieved because we heard stories of him failing students (although now I have been a black belt for four years and have gone back and tested multiple times I have never once saw him a fail anyone). In June 2017 I was eligible to test for my second black belt in which I passed that test too. Those are two of my proudest moments because I have now been in taekwondo for ten years and I am so happy to see all the time and effort I put into it was worth it because I have now exceeded my own expectations.
