Can Success Be Attained Through Cheap Popularity?

“Good Work Ain’t Cheap, Cheap Work Ain’t Good.” One should always learn to attain popularity through the priceless work and efforts that they have been through to get success. We know many great personalities who were pertinacious and have tirelessly strived for success. On the other hand there are many people in our society who tries to get cheap popularity through the help of media.

From the lesson ‘The Browning Version’ written by Terence Rattigan, the character Frank Hunter tries to capture the place of Crocker Harris who had been respected in the minds of the students. During this attempt his student Taplow says “You’re different. You’re young—well, comparitively, anyway—and you’re science. You must know what sadism is.” This tells us that Frank was egocentric.

For example, NBA legend Michael Jordan spent his summers taking hundreds of jump shots a day. Jordan had prodigious physical gifts. But as his long-time coach Phil Jackson writes, it was hard work that made him a legend. When Jordan first entered the league, his jump shot wasn't good enough. He spent his off seasons taking hundreds of jumpers a day until it was perfect. Jackson writes that Jordan's defining characteristic wasn't his talent, but having the humility to know he had to work persistently to be the best.

Success can easily be attained through cheap popularity but he/she will only be known by society for a short period of time while people who have worked tirelessly and productively will be in the hearts of readers.

Q.Can Success Be Earned Through Cheap Popularity?

CHARACTER SKETCH ON CROCKER HARRIS

He is a taciturn, middle-aged teacher of Classics and has clearly had his spirit worn down over the years. Highly disciplined ,conscientious and principled, Crocker-Harris was a teacher who would not compromise on the rules and regulations to suffice sentiments of students. Some may agree with his way of thinking, others may criticise him of being too fastidious . He was an austere man on the students when it came to studies. He was not one of those teachers who would crack romantic jokes in the class to make studies fun, rather his jokes were delivered with a deadpan expression.

Other teachers like Frank begrudged him for the effect he had on the students that all seemed to be scared to death of him. His students were petrified of cutting on him. They could not dare to flout him . He was all shriveled up inside like a nut and he seemed to hate people to like him. It is funny, no master likes being disliked. What may flabbergasted the reader is the instance when Millie Crocker-Harris, wife of Crocker-Harris, suggests Taplow to go and not wait for her husband, as he was at the Bursar's. She also assured him that she would cover for him if her husband questioned about Taplow on returning. So, we can now confidently say that, yes, he was not callous, however, Crocker-Harris was a man that was loathed by his colleagues and even his family members.

VOCABULARY WALL🔠♥

CONSCIENTIOUS: wishing to do one's work or duty well and thoroughly.
FASTIDIOUS: very attentive to and concerned about accuracy and detail.
TACITURN:reserved or uncommunicative in speech; saying little.
AUSTERE: severe or strict in manner or attitude.
DEADPAN: impassive or expressionless.
BEGRUDGED: envy (someone) the possession or enjoyment of (something)
FLOUT: defy
PETRIFIED: so frightened that one is unable to move; terrified.
FLABBERGAST:astonish
CALLOUS:showing or having an insensitive and cruel disregard for others.

CROCKER HARRIS

Mr. Crocker Harris was a strict teacher who could control his students. His students were so scared of him that they could not even think of leaving when he was late. Crocker Harris was old and experienced even though he was a good teacher. He was so adherent to the rules and regulations that he never disclosed his student 's marks before allowed.
He was viewed by himself and others as a failure in his teaching career mostly because, as Taplow puts it, he was unable to pass on his love of Classical literature to his students.
VIRUS - 3 Idiots
Viru Sahastrabudhhe was the director of the college. He was very stricted about students being competitive until he learnt his lesson that he shouldn't be like that anymore. He is an arrogant and ruthless man. Virus is best known for his arrogance and listen the opera music. Just like Crocker Harris he was never influenced by the innocence of students. He wears time saving clothes like velcro shirt and his tie had hooks. Everyday at 2 pm he takes a 7 and a half minute power nap in his office and to save time, he forces his valet Govind to cut his nails, get him shaved etc.

REAL LIFE CHARACTER
This teacher , she taught us during the most important time of our lives. She had a big influence on our lives. She gave real life example. She helped us with our career choices .
She never judged us on our personal level. We respect her even in her absence. We never missed classes for her tests and stay backs. She used to pinpoint our flaws . She made random and serious jokes which were not hilarious, but out of her respect , we still laughed and appreciated her sense of humor. She took her subject too seriously and did not believe in the importance of extra-curricular activities.

CHARACTER SKETCH OF FRANK
Frank Hunter is the dynamic young science teacher who is having an affair with Millie Crocker Harris. He is well-liked by the pupils at the school but fears that his relationship with them is too informal and friendly, undermining his efforts as an educator. He is self confident ,successful and a personable character. He's friendly yet with enough haughtiness ifn him to engage in an extra martial affair with the wife of his colleague. Hunter knows just the right thing to do socially to make other people feel at ease and receptive. He is manipulative and a plaster-Saint. Mr.Frank envies Mr.Crocker and he was a green-eyed monster for the effect he has on the boys in the class. Frank is sadist as he feels pleased when Taplow talks ill about Crocker Harris. He is also conniving, guileful, exploitative and malicious. Therefore Terence Rattigan presents Frank Hunter in a scheming, covetous and calculative character who had little regard for moral implications.

Meanings
Personable- having a pleasant appearance and manner.
Receptive- willing to consider or accept new suggestions and ideas.
Plaster Saint- a person who makes a show of being without moral faults or human weakness, especially in a hypocritical way.
Conniving- given to or involved in conspiring to do something immoral, illegal, or harmful.
Guileful- having or showing sly or cunning intelligence.
Exploitative- making use of a situation or treating others unfairly in order to gain an advantage or benefit.
Malicious- intending or intended to do harm.
Covetous- having or showing a great desire to possess something belonging to someone else.
Green Eyes - envious or jealous.
Haughtiness- the appearance or quality of being arrogantly superior

Taplow, a sixteen year old boy is found waiting for his head master, Mr. Crocker- Harris in the play. He has been asked to come in to do extra work for his head master on the last day of school. Taplow fears of adverse remarks about his results which makes the audience smile. The interaction between Frank and Taplow is quite amusing. The manner in which Taplow immitates his master's voice is comical. The sudden arrival of Crocker Harris' wife, Millie in the midst of an imitation of joke surprises Frank and makes Taplow nervous. After every class, students usually sit together, form groups and discuss about the qualities of their teachers.
