Today was my first day reporting for internship at Arlene House. I arrived early, feeling a bit nervous but also excited to start this new journey. Arlene House, has three floors and there’s even a small souvenir shop on the ground level. The place has a unique, artsy vibe that caught my attention right away.

I met two fellow interns, Syikin and Nabila. Syikin has been here longer, and she quickly became like a guide for me. She was very helpful and patient in showing me around and explaining how things work here. Most of the day was spent getting familiar with the space, understanding the flow of the place, and watching how Syikin and the Nabila handle their daily tasks.

Even though I didn’t have many responsibilities today, I took it as a chance to observe and learn.

Today felt more hands-on compared to my first day. Early in the morning, Syikin began teaching me the opening routine at Arlene House. I learned how to unlock the display areas, switch on the lights and air-conditioning, and make sure everything is neat and ready before visitors arrive. It may sound simple, but I realised how important these small tasks are to create a good impression.

Later in the afternoon, she also explained the closing routine, like checking the exhibits, making sure all lights are off, and securing every section before we leave. It was a lot to remember, but she guided me patiently through each step.

Around noon, Mr. Michael Chan, the manager, came in to give a short briefing. He shared more about Arlene House and what he expects from us as interns. It motivated me to be more alert and responsible.

Overall, it was a productive day. I got to understand what happens behind the scenes at a museum, and I’m excited to keep learning bit by bit.

Today, I was more involved in cleaning duties around Arlene House. Syikin taught me the proper steps based on their standard operating procedures (SOPs). We had to make sure each section ,especially the staircases, exhibit areas, and common touchpoints were cleaned properly using the correct tools.

Each cleaning task has to follow specific guidelines, and once done, we have to report everything in the team’s group chat. This helps the management keep track and ensures that everyone does their part.

It was quite a tiring day physically, but I felt more responsible and involved. I’m learning that even small tasks like cleaning play a big role in maintaining the professionalism and atmosphere of the museum.

Today, Syikin and I focused on cleaning the first floor of Arlene House. It’s part of our daily routine during the opening hour, which starts at 8 AM. We have one hour to complete both cleaning and opening before the souvenir shop opens at 9.

Syikin patiently showed me the correct way to clean each section — including which tools to use and where they are stored. I learned how to dust display shelves properly, clean glass surfaces, and sweep the floor without disturbing any exhibits. She also reminded me to always double-check corners and hidden spots that are often missed.

Although it’s physically tiring, I’m starting to appreciate the structure and routine. Each floor has its own setup, and I realise how important it is to maintain cleanliness consistently. I’m thankful that I have someone like Syikin to guide me through these first steps.

This morning, Syikin and I continued our cleaning routine, this time focusing on the upper floor of Arlene House. As usual, we started at 8 AM and had one hour to complete both the cleaning and opening tasks before the shop opened at 9.

The upper floor has more delicate displays and narrow walkways, so we had to be extra careful while sweeping and wiping down the surfaces. Syikin showed me how to handle the cleaning tools properly to avoid damaging any of the items. She also pointed out specific areas that needed extra attention, like the window corners and wooden frames.

Even though the routine is similar each day, each floor has its own challenges. I’m learning that consistency, patience, and attention to detail are really important in maintaining a space like this. Slowly, I’m starting to feel more confident in doing things on my own.

Today, I had the chance to observe how a visitor tour is handled at Arlene House. After completing our morning cleaning routine, I followed Syikin as she guided a group of visitors around the museum.

The main story presented in this museum is about Chun Tye Phin, the last Kapitan of Malaya. I listened closely as Syikin explained his life, legacy, and historical significance. It was impressive to see how well she delivered the information , it gave me a clearer picture of how I should prepare if I’m asked to guide visitors in the future.

From this session, I learned the structure of a museum walkthrough and the importance of knowing the exhibits inside out. I plan to study more about Chun Tye Phin and the museum’s key highlights so I can be more confident when it’s my turn to engage with visitors.

Today was definitely an unusual day — we got attacked by bees inside the souvenir area! The bees somehow flew into the shop and caused quite a chaos. For almost two hours, Syikin, Nabila, and I tried to chase and get rid of them using slippers, brooms, and even books. It was tiring but also funny in a way. Luckily, no one got stung, and we managed to clear them out. After that, we cleaned the area thoroughly to make sure no bees would come back.

I successfully managed to sell two units from the collection, generating a total sales value of RM400.

This experience helped me improve my communication skills, especially in engaging with visitors and explaining the uniqueness and value of the specimens. It also gave me more exposure to how the museum handles its small-scale commercial activities and inventory management.

Today was a highly engaging day at the museum, filled with exciting educational activities and a large crowd of visitors. One of the main events held was the Kolokium Pemimpin Muda MADANI Kelab Kerjaya Peringkat Kebangsaan, which brought in a significant number of guests to the museum.

A total of 122 students from 18 different schools participated in this program, accompanied by 26 dedicated teachers. The participants came from various regions including Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Perak. The museum became lively and energetic as the students explored different exhibits, asked questions, and showed great interest in the geological samples and fossils on display.

I was assigned to assist with crowd control, guide small student groups around the exhibition area, and provide brief explanations regarding selected exhibits. I also helped ensure that the flow of visitors was smooth and that the safety of all participants was maintained.

This experience gave me a chance to practise public speaking and interact with younger audiences in a fun and educational environment. It was fulfilling to see how curious and excited the students were about geoscience and museum exhibits.

By the end of the day, I felt proud to be part of such a meaningful program that not only promotes science education but also supports youth leadership development through exposure to real-world institutions like our museum.

Today was both productive and meaningful. I began the morning with my usual duties, including ensuring the exhibition area was tidy and visitor-ready. I also helped restock brochures and clean some of the display cabinets under the supervision of Encik Arman.

Later in the day, I had a meeting with Miss Zamila, who checked on my progress and provided feedback for my upcoming internship presentation slides. We went through my draft slide by slide, and she pointed out areas that could be improved — such as highlighting more about my activities and add on pie charts in my slide.

The discussion helped me better understand how to showcase the skills and knowledge I’ve gained throughout my internship. After the meeting, I spent some time reorganising my slides and adding in photos and bullet points based on the suggestions. It felt nice to receive that kind of support and guidance, especially as I prepare to present my experience at the end of this internship period.

Overall, today was a reminder of how much I’ve learned so far, and how important it is to present that journey in a clear and confident way.

Today, I focused on completing and submitting my internship presentation slides to Miss Zamila, Although I had already finished most of the content earlier, I spent the morning selecting and adding a few relevant photos to make the slides more informative and visually appealing. I managed to submit the final version by 2:00 PM, well before the 4:00 PM deadline. Cik Zamila reviewed the slides and was satisfied with the improvements, which gave me a sense of accomplishment and readiness for the upcoming presentation.

In the afternoon, we received a visit from Encik Mustaqim of the Technicians Unit, who brought along a group of student interns from the mineral department. This visit was particularly special, as it marked their final day of internship. As part of their farewell, they were given a guided tour of the museum to explore and appreciate the exhibits from a broader geoscience perspective.

I assisted in welcoming the group and ensured that their visit ran smoothly. It was heartwarming to see how they engaged with the displays, took group photos, and asked questions with genuine curiosity — even on their last day. It reminded me how fast internship experiences can pass and how valuable every moment of learning and exposure truly is.

Today marked my first day reporting for duty at the Geology Museum under the Department of Minerals and Geoscience Malaysia. The environment felt entirely new, more formal and structured than my previous placement, but also very welcoming and full of knowledge waiting to be explored. I was placed under the Technical Services Division, specifically within the Geoscience Services Branch, and was warmly welcomed by Miss Zamila, who gave a short but thorough briefing on my role and the structure of the museum.

I was then introduced to Encik Arman, the officer in charge of the museum, working under the supervision of Cik Zamila. He was the one who guided me and another intern, Yusra, throughout the day. Yusra, who is also from Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, started her internship here earlier, so she already knows the flow of work. It was comforting to have someone familiar to learn from. Both Encik Arman and Yusra were very helpful in explaining the museum’s routines, the tasks expected from us, and the proper working etiquette here.

On my second day at the Geology Museum, I was given a full tour of the gallery to better understand the content, structure, and flow of the exhibits. Encik Arman guided me and Yusra through each section, explaining how the displays are organised according to geological themes, from the Earth’s structure and rock cycle to natural disasters and mining history.

One of the most fascinating areas was the rock and mineral zone. I was introduced to the three main rock types:

Igneous rocks – formed when molten magma cools and solidifies,

Sedimentary rocks – formed from layers of accumulated sediments,

Metamorphic rocks – formed when existing rocks are changed by extreme heat and pressure.

There were also beautiful displays of crystals, gemstones, and mineral ores like tin, copper, and gold, which highlight Malaysia’s geological wealth.

By my third day, I started becoming more familiar with the daily responsibilities at the Geology Museum, especially the opening and closing routines. Each morning, my task begins with disarming the security alarm system, unlocking the front door, switching on all the necessary lights, and powering up the main exhibits, including the dinosaur animatronic, which immediately brings the gallery to life.

We have to ensure the doors are opened before 8:10 AM sharp, as the cleaning staff will arrive around that time to begin their duties. The museum itself opens to the public at 9:00 AM and closes at 4:30 PM.

At the end of the day, I assist with the closing procedures, which include switching off all lights and displays, locking up the doors, and reactivating the security alarm system before leaving.

Aside from that, my main duty throughout the day is to be stationed at the front counter, where I assist visitors who walk in. I help them log their entry in the registration book and provide answers to general questions about the exhibits. Although my role is mainly focused on front desk assistance, it gives me a great opportunity to observe visitor behaviour, improve my communication skills, and gradually prepare myself to become a museum guide.

Today felt more relaxed, which gave me the chance to observe how the museum operates throughout the day. Since it wasn’t too crowded, I spent most of my time at the front counter, monitoring how visitors interact with the exhibits and how they move through the gallery. I noticed that most guests tend to spend extra time at the rock and fossil sections, especially the dinosaur display, which always manages to attract attention from children and adults alike.

Although my main responsibility is to assist visitors with the logbook and basic inquiries, I took this opportunity to review the content of the panels and displays more closely. I’m starting to memorise key facts so that I can eventually explain them confidently if anyone asks.

Encik Arman occasionally came by to check if everything was in order and shared a few tips on how to handle visitors politely and efficiently. It’s small interactions like these that help me improve both my knowledge and communication skills. I also helped ensure the gallery remained tidy and that safety signs were properly placed near delicate or interactive exhibits.

Today, Miss Zamila assigned me a special task, to assist in retyping and converting one of the museum’s internal storytelling documents from PDF to Word format. The book contains detailed descriptions about the museum’s exhibits, including historical narratives, geological explanations, and background information for visitor reference. Since the file was originally scanned and not editable, my role was to recreate it manually, ensuring accuracy in both content and formatting.

This task might sound simple at first glance, but it required a high level of focus and patience. I had to pay close attention to details such as scientific terms, proper names, spacing, and image placement. The book itself is an important resource used by museum staff and guides during educational sessions with school groups and tourists.

I realised how essential documentation is in a museum setting, not just for operational use, but also for preserving knowledge and improving visitor engagement. Through this task, I gained better insight into the way information is structured and communicated in a formal museum context. It was a quiet day at the counter, so I managed to make good progress on the document.

Today, I continued working on the storytelling document that was assigned by Miss Zamila. The task is still in progress as the original file contains more than 300 pages. I focused on typing and formatting steadily, aiming for accuracy while managing my time well throughout the day. Since the work is quite detailed, I haven’t submitted any part for review yet.

Apart from that, I assisted Encik Arman by inspecting the exhibition area. I helped make sure all displayed items were in proper condition, checking for any tilted panels, labels that may have come loose, or items that had shifted out of place. This might seem like a small job, but it’s essential to keep the gallery neat, safe, and presentable for visitors.

Overall, it was a calm but productive day. I'm slowly getting more familiar with the flow of work here and learning how to multitask between desk duties and gallery maintenance.

However, there was a small technical issue, the TV screen in the gallery wasn't working properly. The TV is normally used to display educational videos for visitors, so it’s an important part of the exhibit.

Mr. Arman contacted the department’s IT specialist, Mr. Fateh, to come over and inspect the problem. I observed how they checked the wiring and connection settings. It was interesting to see how even small tech issues are handled professionally in a government environment.

While waiting for the fix, I continued with my usual routine and helped keep the gallery in order. The issue reminded me that maintenance, whether it's for displays or digital equipment, is just as important as welcoming guests.

Encik Farid was the one who handled the visit, he explained everything about the museum, from its history to the rock collections and the roles of each section.

I followed along and listened quietly from the side.

Today, we were invited to attend a Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration organised by the Technical Services Division, the very division we’re attached to during our internship. It was a more intimate gathering compared to the earlier JMG-wide event, but still very lively and warm.

The event was held in the technical office area, and staff from different branches under the division joined in. There was a delicious spread of traditional food, and we had the opportunity to engage more closely with the officers and staff we work around daily.

It was also nice to feel included and appreciated by the team. Despite the celebration, the museum remained open as usual, and we returned to our counter duties after the event.

Today, Mr. Arman brought us to visit the office of the Director of Laboratory Services. It was my first time stepping into one of the higher-level offices, so honestly, I was a bit nervous, but also curious to see how things worked on that side.

The director gave us a short overview about what the lab team does, like handling mineral and soil testing, analysing samples, and preparing reports for other departments. I didn’t realise how big of a role the lab plays behind the scenes in supporting all the technical work at JMG.

The visit was quite short, but it was nice to get a quick peek at how the “serious science” happens beyond the museum. After that, we went back to our usual gallery tasks like assisting visitors and checking the exhibit area.

Today, we received a fresh batch of brochures from the Perak State Tourism Department. The brochures featured various local attractions, geosites, and cultural highlights across the state. It was nice to see how the tourism department supports public awareness and promotes travel destinations around Perak.

I helped sort and organise the brochures at the museum’s front counter area. We made sure everything was arranged neatly and easy for visitors to pick up. Some older brochures were also removed and replaced with these updated versions.

It felt great to refresh the counter area and contribute to making the museum more visitor-friendly. Plus, going through the brochures gave me more knowledge about local attractions that I can mention when chatting with guests.

One focuses more on general reference books and reports, while the other holds more specialised documents like geological maps, site records, and archived technical data.

He gave us a brief explanation about how the libraries operate, who usually uses them, and what kind of information can be found there. It was interesting to see how the department manages and preserves important scientific references.

Although the visit was short, it gave me a clearer view of the department’s structure and the resources available for staff and researchers.

Today, I had a quick session with Miss Zamila regarding the museum storytelling book project. She reviewed my progress and gave me some guidance on editing techniques, formatting, and the overall flow of the content. I also learned how to organise large documents effectively and ensure the text is accurate and easy to understand. It was a helpful session to improve both my writing and editing skills.

Besides that, I continued my usual task at the front counter

The session was held from 9 AM to 11 AM and included announcements, department discussions, and a Yassin recitation. It was a great opportunity to observe the formal structure of meetings and how internal communication is handled.

After the session, I returned to the museum to continue my regular duties at the counter and assisted visitors as usual.

Today, the museum welcomed many visitors, including a special group of around 40 people from UMK Jeli, who arrived by bus in the afternoon. The visit had been arranged earlier through Miss Zamila, so we prepared in advance.

I accompanied Miss Zamila during the session as she explained the museum’s exhibits and shared information about geoscience and mineral resources. It was a valuable learning moment for me to observe how group visits are handled, especially from academic institutions.
