He was living in a trailer that he had “rented” from a man named Charlie, while also working at McDonalds. He reconnected with Jan and Bob and went to Niland with them for a while, not very long, before heading to Alaska.
Chapter 6: narrator receives a letter from a man named Ronald. Ronald basically wanted an old magazine article about McCandless death. Eventually they met with each other and began to talk. Ronald tells the story of how him and Chris became good friends and how close they had become over a period of time.

Chapter 17: Chris never used maps when he got into this certain area so he wouldn’t know what was around him. Chris has tried to pass the same river before but struggled too because of the intensity of the river. Sooner or later a contraption was built to help him cross. As Krakauer tried to cross the river there were times he was uncertain and didn’t know what the river was capable of and so he began to get flustered and freak out midway while crossing the river. When they finally approach the bus where Chris had been staying, the bones of the animals that he had survived off of were still present and are just lying around scattered.

Chapter 18: Krakauer comes to the realization that Chris ate moldy potatoes. In early August Chris was still attempting to hunt and feed himself. On the 12 of August Chris left a note that said he was going to pick some berries, but he did not begin to ask for help until after picking the berries. Chris writes a goodbye note on a page from “The Wandering Man”, he explains that he was content and happy with his life. Krakauer compares Chris to a monk. He does this because he says that in Chris’ last photo he had peace in his eyes, and on his face.
