Children who miss school are not able to benefit from teacher-directed lessons, peer interactions, and other activities which are designed to support student success. Having high absences from school during K-5th grade can also be an important indicator of later academic success (Morrissey, T., Hutchison, L. & Winsler, A., 2014).

The overall daily attendance rate at Littlerock Elementary School for students who missed the entire day of school, get to school after 11:00, or leave before 2:00 is currently averaging around 52 students per day (T. Eklund, personal communication, April 1, 2022).

On-Time Tigers!

PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. It targets all students in the school by establishing a school culture of respect and safety to improve social, behavioral, emotional, and academic outcomes for all students (PBIS.org)

The plan that I would like to start at Littlerock Elementary for students kindergarten through fifth grade would be based off one of the current PBIS practices we use. When teachers see a student displaying a safe, respectful, responsible, or kind action they are given a "tiger paw." The paws are then saved and collected to later be used as money in the tiger paw store to buy prizes.

To begin improving daily attendance rates, I want to hand out specific "attendance tiger paws" at the beginning of school. Each student will get one tiger paw before the bell rings, as a reward for being to school on time. Once the bell rings and they are considered tardy students will not be able to receive the paw. These special tiger paws will be entered into a daily drawing for larger prizes from community businesses like personal pizzas, ice cream cones, and slurpeez. The names will be drawn at the end of day. Two names from grades K-2, and two names from grades 3-5. The student must be present to receive the prize.

The incentive for getting the tiger paw before the bell rings will hopefully help families get to school on time, and since the student must be present at the end of the day to receive the prize, therefore also working to reduce the early releases that count as a full missed day. After two weeks of the program starting, the members of the PBIS team will convene to review data to see if the attendance numbers are improving.
