Most favorite character:
My most favorite character is David because he was the good guy in the story. David taught Tally how to love herself as an ugly and he tried to show her that even the uglies could have a nice life. He showed her that being a pretty wasn't that important after all and that all that matters was the inside. David had more influence on Tally than Shay because shay has always tried to convince Tally that It was okay to be an ugly but David actually proved that to her by giving her compliments and learning her so many things in the smoke. Also, if I compare David to Peris, David has always been there for Tally and unlike Peris who left the minute he became a pretty. David represents comfort and support.

Least favorite character:
My least favorite character is Tally, the protagonist. The whole story revolves around her.
She's my least favorite character because I personally think she does not have a very distinct personality. She gets influenced by everyone and doesn't seem to have opinions of her own. She gets influenced by Shay's bad behavior and by all the pretties. Even though she has great qualities, such as courage and loyalty, I think she is a bit obnoxious: At the beginning, Tally peer pressures Shay to look at herself with all of the pretty features, and tries to convince her to turn into a new pretty too. I also think that she doesn't volunteer to do things simply because she has a valiant heart. She does them because she's forced to do it. For example, she goes to find Shay because Dr. Cable told her an ultranium. Also, In the end, she accepts to be the one to try the cure that Maddy created, but only because Shay couldn't anymore.

I think that Shay would have been a better protagonist. She has a way better story line than Tally, and her personality is a lot more vibrant.

Part 3 - Themes

There were many themes addressed in this novel but I chose the themes of Society and Friendship.
Society: What is interesting in Uglies is that the society is separated into different towns. The surgery has an important role because it classes you in the new pretty town. It's a pity that being a pretty involves that you can't talk to the uglies anymore because besides the physical appearance, there is no differences between people. The surgery does not change the inside, the most important thing after all.

Friendship: this theme has first taken place with Tally and Peris' friendship. They used to be very close but their friendship has changed because Peris became a pretty . When Tally went to the pretty's town, Peris told her that they couldn't be friends until she becomes a pretty. This is a good example to show that friendship changes through time. I would include the relationship between Tally and David into the theme of friendship. I think that this friendship is very solid and honest based on how David treated Tally as elaborated in part 1 . Also , friendship sometimes came with loneliness when the strings broke. For example, when Tally and Shay got into a fight, Shay was all on her own and she felt alone in her dorm.

CTC
Analysis between two characters:
I chose to compare Tally and Shay. The two girls are similar in a few ways; They have a lot of qualities in common, such as determination, loyalty, courage and they both have a strong character. Friendship is a value they both cherish and they won't let each other down. For example, Tally tries to protect Shay from Special Circumstances. We can also see that Shay really wants her best friend to follow her in the Smoke. Those are examples that prove that Tally and Shay are very loyal.

On the other hand, both girls are pretty different too. Tally gets influenced by almost everyone and is very easy to manipulate. She was the perfect victim to approach when Special Circumstances needed information on the Smoke. She also wants the surgery because everyone gets it. On the contrary, Shay does not let herself being influenced by anyone or anything. She could not care less about being an ugly or not having the big operation to turn pretty. She's not even influenced by he very best friend when she tries to convince her. She is decided to quit uglyville when her time will come, unlike Tally, who dies of impatience.

Part 4 - Antagonist

From my part, I would say that Dr. Cable is the antagonist of this novel. Dr. Cable is main character of special circumstances who didn't let Tally have the surgery except she goes to the smoke. Dr.Cable is an opponent to Tally, the protagonist. Dr.Cable is the antagonist because she's the "bad" person in this novel. She's responsible of every bad things that had happened in this book. For example : She pushed Tally to infiltrate the Smoke, she forced Shay to become a pretty, she insulted Tally at time and finally, she destroyed the Smoke. I think there's a similarity with the antagonists between this novel and the witch in snow white because they both have bad intentions to their protagonist. We can compare Dr.Cable to any villain. In this book, the doctor isn't nice with the uglies but is with the pretties. Furthermore, the main antagonist is Dr.Cable but also the special circumstances in general. This establishment really wants Tally and the other runaway uglies to be captured and they tried hard to . Also, they killed Az by testing a forgetting cure to is brain. It shows us that they are the not good and that's why I think they are part of the antagonists of the novel as well.

I would totally recommend this novel for those who like dystopia's . If you are thoughtful, you will like this book. There are many reflective themes such as friendship, society, apperance, etc. This book shows the contrast between the society and the real values of a human being. This book gives an apprehension of the future or the problem that we might be faced to . It is really about a teenager mentality : wanting to become attractive and wanting to be and look the same as everyone . They are good lessons to learn in this book .

CTC
In part 3, I liked to see the characters and their relationship evolve. In the first two parts, we don't see a lot of deep relationships or any deep personalities. I think that in part 3, this changes a lot. For example, we see that Tally changes her mind about the operation. She starts to have a few opinions of her own. She meets David, and soon falls in love with him. I think that their relationship is very passionate and deep, because love is a very powerful emotion in a couple. It's not present in every relationship and the fact that they love each other proves that it's a very deep relationship.
I also liked to see the relationship between Shay and Tally evolve. They started as friends, to the point where Tally followed Shay to the Smoke and gave up her operation. Then, Tally met David and they fell in love. This is a turning point in the story. Shay, who was in love with David got insanely mad at Tally, because she felt like she stole David from her, because she loved her first. She felt betrayed by the girl she called her best friend. Then, when Special Circumstances attacked, Shay got turned pretty because of her. She felt more guilty than ever. This feeling of guilt is also important in Tally's development because at the beginning, Tally peer pressured her to turn pretty. She now is aware of Shay's decisions.

At the end Tally ended up not being a pretty because the surgery failed even though she was ready to give herself up to the authorities. My alternative ending would be : What if she had had the surgery?

Normally, the good person wins but in the novel, its the special circumstances , the bad group. Imagine if Tally would have immediately turned into a pretty. The story would have been really different. She would probably have been friends again with Peris or something could have happened with them. Maybe she would have regretted to have been turned into a pretty. She would have had a different attitude towards the uglies.

She wouldn't feel the same connection with David and Dr.Cable would not be seen as the bad person. The main thing is that she would have never realized that what counts is the inside. In not having receive the surgery, she has developed a beautiful way of thinking .

C
The first conflict I identified is the one between Shay and Tally. They have a relationship full of up and downs. In the first part, they had a fight in the beginning because of the operation, but this is not one I am going to analyse.
The one that caught my attention the most is when Tally stole David from Shay. The conflict only gets worse when Special Circumstances invaded the Smoke. Shay is mad at Tally because they exposed the hidden community. She felt betrayed. She turned pretty because of her friend, who had a secret deal with Dr. Cable. '' Pretty? No. I [Shay] got to be the first because I made the most trouble. You should have seen me kicking and biting. [...] Of course, Shay's blessing was meaningless. It wasn't forgiveness, , it was just brain damage' (p.366)''

The second conflict I identified is when Special Circumstances attacked. When everyone turned pretty, Maddy had to test her cure, but Shay already had been turned pretty, and didn't want to be experimented on anymore. Shay's right were involved; She could die and doesn't want to take the risk anymore because she feels happy. Tally then volunteered. This was a major conflict in the book because the cure could save everyone from the brain lesions when people are forced to be pretty. They needed a volunteer and no one are willing to accept to sacrifice themselves. '' How are we going to find one [a volunteer/willing subject]? anyone who's pretty is going to say no. (p.394)''
