Favorite Literature this Year

From the Euro Lit curriculum, my favorite piece of literature would have to be The Importance of Being Earnest, but the work that has impacted me the most would have to be Black Swan Green. I think this is because of how relatable Jason’s character is. Jason is a teenager going through puberty, and struggles with his relations to other people and popularity. This is parallel to high school life, because everyone is a teenager concerned about how others perceive them. Much like Jason’s school, Lynbrook also has a caste system, and those at the bottom are treated poorly. The way that Jason didn’t give in to peer pressure, and helps Moran even though he knows that he will be at the bottom of the caste system, makes me think that Jason is a very admirable person. Jason’s development as a character is what makes me think Black Swan Green impacted me the most. Jason starts out as wimpy and cares too much about the opinions of others to do what they want. However, by the end of the book, Jason has grown to care less about what others think about him, and he even rats out the bullies. Jason becomes more mature compared to before, and ends up having experienced a lot of things, such as admitting his mistakes(breaking his heirloom watch), meeting Madame Crommelynck meeting gypsies, and kissing. However, Jason doesn’t automatically become happy or start having a great life, like you would expect a story to end. His problems are not all solved, but Jason is able to continue moving forwards with his life. I think that this makes Black Swan Green appeal a lot to me, because it is so realistic. In real life, your problems aren’t solved easily. Broken things don’t always get mended. Some things never change. But life still moves on, and a part of life is learning to accept all the negativities. I think that Black Swan Green has inspired me, but I can’t say that it has changed me. Changing is difficult, and although I may be moving towards change slowly, it’s not something that happens right away. My least favorite book this year would have to be Siddhartha. I didn’t dislike any of the books we read this year, but I would have to say Siddhartha is the one I liked the least; it was a good book, but I found it more difficult to read than the other books we read this year.

Fiction

I think that reading fiction is beneficial, because reading fiction can help you develop your morals and reflect on yourself. For example, young children learn from their surroundings, which often include their parents and paper media. As a child, I often read books such as The Berenstain Bears or The Magic Tree House. The Berenstain Bears books were about a family of bears, and how the young bears would act really naughty and how they would eventually understand that they were being bad. I think that those stories really shaped my morals and taught how to control myself. The Magic Tree House series was full of adventures to different places in different time periods, so I learned a lot about different cultures and values. In school we read Siddhartha and Frankenstein, in which the main characters both had to reflect on their own decisions and self. I think that I was able to benefit from reading this because it teaches me about how you should think back on your mistakes so that you don’t repeat them, and that life is a cycle, so the meaning of life is to live. This is because we repeat the same processes of eating, sleeping, and working, so we eat and sleep so we can work, but we work so we have food to eat and a place to sleep. I think that this helps us realize that maybe we don’t need to dig so deep to try to find meaning to our lives. Seeing characters make mistakes in fiction and being able to learn from the negative impact a decision makes on a character can help you from making that mistake yourself. Sometimes you might even realize that you have been doing something that you think should not be done when a character in a novel is doing it, and you will be able to stop yourself, or at least be aware that you do not approve of your own actions. I think that reading fiction can also be beneficial because it serves as a way to “live a second life” by placing ourselves in the shoes of a character in a story. Anything can happen, and unlike in real life, you have more choice as to what happens, depending on what genre you’re reading. Real life is too unstable to know what might happen next, and there are no guarantees of a happy ending.

My name is Judy Schel, and I am 17 years old. I live in San Jose, California. I plan to study stop motion, because I think that seeing nonliving things move is like magic. It’s also a bit like playing god. I think that graduating from high school is one of my best achievements. High school has been so painful to go through, I think that it’s amazing that I am finally leaving. I like working with 3D materials, because it is very fun. Recently, I have been trying to customize a doll. I think it’s fun to customize things. I also really like playing games like Don’t Starve Together or horror rpgs like ib and Mad Father. Playing games with my friends is a lot of fun. I also enjoy reading manga and webtoons. Travelling with my mom is also pretty fun. I really like polar bears, so I was really excited to get to see them in person. I currently don’t have any plans for the future. I’m not a very ambitious person, so I think that it would be fine as long as I can stay close to my family and friends. I think that if the people I care about are happy, then I can be happy too. I think that my greatest happiness comes from being able to be with the people I care about.
