Barometer children-kids who dictate the weather in the classroom. We have a real passion for working with these students and have developed systems that support building their stamina at their own rate, even when it varies from the rate of the rest of the class.

CONNECTION: These are the students who have difficulty following direction and building stamina. Often have difficult behavior and I am sure every class that I teach in will have a few "barometer children" in it at some point or another.

Without the Daily 5, teachers questions if literacy tasks just kept students busy or were the kids engaged in literacy tasks that will make a positive impact on their literary lives?

CONECTION: I am starting to discover that The Daily 5 will not only make a positive impact on the students literacy knowledge and classroom management but also on the sanity of the teacher. As a teacher assesses their day, it would be so helpful to know that the children were able to make choices, build stamina and improve reading, vocabulary and comprehension.

Teachers don't want to "manage" students, rushing around the room putting out fires, we wanted to create routines and procedures that fostered independent literacy behaviors that were ingrained to the point of being habits.

CONNECTION: When teachers are just starting out, they assume their students will enter the classroom knowing appropriate behavior. With the implementation of the Daily 5 into the classroom, teachers are able to understand that each class is different and they spend at least 20 days building their classroom community. Assessing needs, building stamina, defining appropriate behavior.

The teacher driven model that relied on busywork, workbooks, packets and inauthentic reading/writing, resulted in low engagement.

The Daily 5, when implemented in the classroom is supposed to build stamina and independence. I also thing that this model of teaching is promoting life-long healthy habits. Not only just for literacy but in life. The Daily 5 is teaching students to make choices, complete tasks as a group or independently and set goals.

CONNECTION: This increases the students motivation and engagement. During this
time the teacher is able to work with students one-one-one or in small groups with students who are assessed to be on similar reading levels.

Everyday students are given the option to choose Read to self or Work on writing. These are done daily and as the time permits there will be an addition of Read to someone, Listen to reading and Word work.
