This week I started reading a book, which is called The Foxhole Court, and the writer used a very different and strange expression to an outfit that I have never seen before: Wife beater. I’m going to leave the passage here for the context: “Neil twisted to see a large stranger standing in the locker room doorway. The wife beater the man wore showed off sleeves of tribal flame tattoos.” (Excerpt from “The Foxhole Court”, Nora Sakavic).

This expression refers to a kind of tank top used by men, that white and tight one. It was defined in the 50’s, when the movie A street car named desire was released; the story is based on a play written by Tennessee Williams and first performed on Broadway on December 3, 1947. The play dramatizes the experiences of Blanche DuBois, a woman who, after encountering a series of personal losses, decides to leave her situation to move into her sister’s apartment in New Orleans. Her sister and her  brother-in-law Stanley live in a toxic relationship marked by domestic violence. Stanley, performed by Marlon Brando, commonly uses that white and tight tank top, and sometimes he beats his wife when they have an argument. This semiotic behavior made the viewers nickname the tank top as wife beater. I didn’t know about this expression, and apparently it is very common in the US (at least for older people).

I was searching any academic expressions, so I found "On the other hand" and I want to share with you.

On the other hand it's like thinking about other option, other version. Or say a contradictory idea, it's like opposition.

This week I was reading a book and I saw the word tram. At first, I thought it was the word train that was spelled wrong. However, I decided to look for the traslation. After all, it would be difficult for a book to be published with a misspelled word.

That's when I found out the meaning. A tram it is a cable car, a trolley car. It is most used on british english, so i wasn't familiar with it. So it was nice learning a new word!

Recently I was looking through my book and i saw this word, and i didn”t know what it meant. So i looked it up and discovered that it suggests a positive and successful future, something favorable and propitious.

This week at class, we were talking about superlatives and comparatives and then we saw some adjectives to improve our vocabulary. I saw the expression "thought provoking" and I didn´t knew what it was about. It´s definition is: to express something that makes you think about it, intriguing.

This curiosity led me to research the terms in english, and i found a clear differentiation.

"Snakes" (serpentes) is the general term for any serpentine reptile.

"Cobra" is the name for a specific type of highly venemous snake, such as the Naja.

They are always barking up the wrong tree. And it is really frustrating, because the one that needs to listen to all of the warnings is usually me.

The most frequent uses are:

Reconnection: "Let's catch up soon!" (Vamos nos encontrar em breve) means to talk and exchange the latest news after a time apart. It's a friendly and informal way to reconnect.

Updating/Completing Tasks: Using “I took a long nap yesterday, so today I have to catch up on my work" (Eu tirei uma longa soneca ontem, então hoje eu tenho que colocar o meu trabalho em dia), the expression means to finish or get up-to-date with pending tasks or activities, such as "catch up on my homework" (to get current with my homework).

In the same context, people who testify and give evidences of an event for a judicial tribunal or a journal interview are also called "witnesses".

Die - Die is a specialised tool, but its purpose is particular: it gives shape to material, usually through cutting, stamping, forming, or extrusion.

I find other academic expression, and I will share with you, because I believe that is very important.
