In the chapter London page 59-66 William Thornhill was packed in a tight stone cell with hardly enough room to move on the dirty pallets. Sal and William Thornhill revised what to do about being guilty of stealing something. The next day came around a William Thornhill had rehearsed what to do and say in court. The judges were strict on William and very intimidating. Mr Knapp was assigned to speak for William Thornhill and had no hope in the first quarter. It was a back and forth feud between Lucas and Knapp. Thornhill had a hint of life or death but still showed some type of mercy. William was aware of his death sentence to be hung.

William had always been a strong boy. He was a thief and so were all of his friends. They were only good because they were fast and agile. Sal was his best friend. She was a sweet and caring girl. With a good family. William and Sal would always be at the fields. They loved the fresh air and to get away from the city.
William's mother passed away when he was only 13. His father passed away shortly afterwards. His two older brothers were not around, so he had to take charge. He went through a couple of jobs; a cotton mill, a tan yard, a malting, and then finally the docks. At the docks he was caught stealing and was punished with 100 whips. he learnt how to steal correctly from the docks after this. He was offered an apprenticeship at the docks during the harsh winter when the river Thames was frozen.

From The pages 25 - 33 that we've read, we've learnt from the authors words that. If he completed seven years of apprenticeship he'd become a freeman of the river Thames. He then acquired his boatmans license due to the trials he faced - rowing from Hay's Wharf to Sufference Dock, to Wapping Old Stairs from Fresh Wharf in the period of a week. The tide was too strong for him, If he missed his chance at the flood, he'd have to wait 12 hours for the water to recede. William learnt the hard way that a gentry couldn't be trusted, they could catch his boat to reach a certain destination. Then they'll say that they would return and catch his boat to where they had come from and pay for both ways A woman and a gentleman approached William's, they were both husband and wife, yet it looked like the man was unsure with what to do with his wife. The wife was exposing her leg to William, so that her husband would give her the attention she required or possibly she felt attracted to William. " The way men were ranged on top of each other.... each man higher than one, lower than another."

late in 1977 William Thronhill was born, there were distant cousins, and more William Thornhills. then when the wife of uncle Mathew the sea captain had a new baby, he was named William Thornhill too.
William was always hungry, when food did come it was a matter of cramming it into his mouth so his hands could reach for more. his older brothers would rip bread out of Williams hands so he was left with very little. night was cold, lay shivering on the mouldy straw scratching at fleas and bedbugs.
