In August of 1973, Jan-Erick Olsson, a convicted criminal, held up the Norrmalmstorg Bank in Stockholm, Sweden which turned into a hostage crisis. This event lasted for five days and was the first crime to be covered on live television in Sweden. This crime was also where the phenomenon, the Stockholm Syndrome, originated because the hostages bonded with their captors and refused to cooperate with the police. The hostages were distrustful of the police since they risked the safety of the hostages. After a five-day crisis, the police launched a tear-gas attack, and the robbers surrendered.

Wikipedia contributors. “Norrmalmstorg Robbery.” Wikipedia, 23 Aug. 2024, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norrmalmstorg_robbery.

February 6th, 1996 In sand island, Honolulu, Hawaii, 28 year old John Miranda took hostages at his old job of employment, The Seal Masters Of Hawaii building. Miranda was previously working at the building but got fired 8 months prior to the crisis. He was enraged over having no money or job, he also accused the company higher ups of racism and firing him solely because the was Hawaiian/Puerto Rican. Miranda was armed with a sawed off shotgun and a knife, as he entered he demanded 20,000$ in cash from the company. As the police were called Miranda took 5 employees working in the building as hostage, one of them being his former supervisor/ vice president of the company. During this crisis 2 hostages were injured, one seriously, but Miranda was the only Fatality. Miranda opened fire with his shotgun and shot George once in the leg. Nearly half of his leg was blown off. During negotiation Miranda dragged George to an open window to show police he was already shot, he than threatened that the had do intention of peacefully surrendering. At some point, Miranda was focused on something else and George climbed out the same open window, and fell 10 feet to the ground below. Around 2:30 p.m., John Miranda stood with one of his hostages McNeil in the street surrounded by police. As Miranda reached for his gun to kill McNeil The police shot him in the chest, and passed away. A few Weeks after the hostage event, he was found to have murdered his former girlfriend prior to the crisis.

Jimmy Lee Dykes, a 65-year-old Vietnam War-era veteran boarded a school bus in Midland City, Alabama near a highway. The bus had children and a driver aboard and Dykes demanded the driver give him a six and eight year old child, when the driver refused Dykes shot him 5 times and proceeded to run off with a 5 year old boy, taking him to an underground bunker on Dyke’s property equipped with bombs and a PVC pipe. Through the PVC pipe, negotiators were able to communicate with Dykes in hopes to get him to let the boy go. Dykes requested to be able to hold the hand of a specific female reporter and the kill himself on live tv. After 6 days of negotiations, they started to break down and FBI hostage rescue agents had to take action, so they threw stun grenades in the bunker, entered, and shot Dykes, rescuing the 5 year old boy in good condition.
