Concept Definition: What is a Mosque and what does it have to do with Muslim discrimination?

Muslims practice the religion called Islam. Similar to a church, they pray in a Mosque or Islamic Center (Is known as a masjid). They are holy places or prayer and worship. Mosques are often open-aired buildings with easy access. There are many different mosque styles such as the image on the right. Because of many factors, many Mosques or Masjids are bombed or vandalized. This vandalism often consists of: burnings of Qurans (Equivalent to the bible in Islam), writing slurs on walls, ransacking, slashing tires of vehicles, a man once put the head of a pig in Islamic Center (eating pork is haram in Islam), threats, etc.

Causes and Effects of Islamophobia and other factors

In the U.S. there are a variety of causes for vandalism and bombings of mosques. There are three major causes though. The first one targets Americans and that is Trump's anti-muslim agenda. Trump has on countless occasions, wrongly called "all Muslims terrorists" and banned them from entering the U.S. until President Joe Biden lifted that ban recently. The second major cause is the blurred lines between ISIS/al Qaeda/terrorists and regular Muslims or people of Islam. A misconception from false media is the idea that all Muslims are a terrorist or part of ISIS, al Qaeda, etc. This leads to Islamophobia and white supremacists vandalizing and discriminating. The assumption that every Muslim is a terrorist is completely false and helps normalize Islamophobia. The last cause is major events like 9/11. 9/11 was a fatal attack on the twin towers carried out by Al Qaeda, an extremist Muslim group against western ideologies. A quote from the United States Department of Justice states: “The Civil Rights Division, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and United States Attorneys offices have investigated over 800 incidents since 9/11 involving violence, threats, vandalism and arson against Arab-Americans, Muslims, Sikhs, South-Asian Americans and other individuals perceived to be of Middle Eastern origin. The incidents have consisted of telephone, internet, mail, and face-to-face threats; minor assaults as well as assaults with dangerous weapons and assaults resulting in serious injury and death; and vandalism, shootings, arson, and bombings directed at homes, businesses, and places of worship.” These are some of the many effects of these types of events. Other events that led to discrimination include the Paris attacks, San Bernardino, the presidential elections, Orlando shooting, etc. As a result of extremist terrorist groups, Muslims face discrimination and violence from events that happened years ago. Thus, Muslims are afraid of praying at mosques, a holy place to worship Allah and practice their religion that they should be safe in. Among U.S. Muslims themselves, many say they have experienced specific instances of discrimination, including being treated with suspicion, singled out by airport security, or called offensive names, according to a 2017 survey of Muslim Americans.

Problem Solution: What are the issues and what are people and organizations doing to solve it

There are many problems surrounding Islam and Mosques. Islamophobia is normalized and there many myths surrounding it fueled by false information and myths spread on social media. The media is a big problem in giving bad representation and not talking about Muslim discrimination enough. The media has been prompted for changes by New Zealand and other governments to prevent things like the live streaming of the Christchurch mosque shooting on FaceBook. This has caused many people to falsely believe that Muslims are part of ISIS or other terrorist organizations or support them. A solution for that would be learning about Islam and beliefs in schools to help combat internalized Islamophobia. This has caused many people to be hurt and killed and property damage. To resolve these problems, governments have made laws/bills to combat the discrimination and hate Muslims face. For example, in New Zealand after the 2019 mosque shooting, they tightened gun laws even more and banned the deadliest type of semi-automatic weapons. In the U.S., the United States Department of Justice has a Civil Rights division and post 9/11 discriminatory backlash division. To further build on New Zealand’s attempt to prevent mosque shootings/bombings would be tightening gun laws and creating laws about weapons in religious places.

On March 15, 2019, my life would be changed forever. My name is Mirwais Waziri and I am from Pakistan but living in New Zealand. That day I went to the Al Noor Mosque to do my afternoon prayers but it was not long until a heavily armed man who I would later learn the name of entered the mosque. He was in a separate room and had started to fire the guns but after, he entered the main prayer room and started shooting people. One of the shots entered my leg as I felt a searing pain. I could only pray to Allah that my family would remain unharmed. He continued to go on shooting the room until he was satisfied and left. Following the shooting authorities and first responders came to aid us. As people were being carried out, I saw a close friend's son unmoving and bloodied. By then, the shock of the events had started to sink in. Later when we were testifying at the trial, I told the shooter who would end up killing 51 and injuring 40 people “I am often associated as a terrorist. You took that name from me. Today, you are the terrorist.” The man, Brenton Tarrant at first didn’t plead guilty until he was told it could maybe help him. He was proud of his actions; felt accomplished and like he had done something good. He was sentenced his life behind bars. By now I have recovered from my injuries but I am no longer able to work at my job as a welder due to said injuries. “You chose to perform a despicable and cowardly act”.
