Patrons often found him hard to deal with when working with him or discussing deals with him. Donatello wanted artistic freedom. He knew some Humanists, but he was not cultural. He had a more detailed and wide-ranging knowledge of ancient sculpture than any other artist of his day. His work was inspired by older works of art. ("Donatello."
