“In a diverse classroom, no single method can reach all learners. Multiple pathways to achieving goals are needed.” (Learning For All. 20130. p13). Universal Design for Learning is a strategy that allows the educator to organize their classroom in a way that considers the needs of each learner, while providing a physical learning environment that promotes equity and inclusion amongst all learners in the room. Throughout this document, we have provided several tools that support Differentiation and Universal Design for Learning in the classroom.

Self Regulation represents a different way of understanding why a child might be having problems with self-control and more importantly, what can be done to support them. As educators, it is part of our responsibility to identify the needs that are being met within the child and what needs to to be addressed and better supported. Self-regulation represents our attempt to understand the causes of problematic behavior and then mitigate those causes, rather than just trying to extinguish the behavior without understanding its roots. (Shanker, 2012)
Click here to explore this tool!

A choice board is a visual support that can include objects, drawings or text which can be used by the student to communicate which activity/task they would like to engage in or complete. Typically, a choice board contains a minimum of two choices to encourage student autonomy in how they would like to proceed during that time.
Click here to explore this tool!

Google Read and Write

Google Read and Write is an extension for your computer that provides students with alternative ways to interact with reading and writing on a computer. This extension allows for you to use technology to read documents, instructions, books, websites, etc. out loud to you, known as text-to-speech, it also allows you to use a mic and speak out loud your the content you want to put into documents, search engines, etc and it will then put it in text format. This is known as Speech-to-text. It also has many other user friendly components that help students to become more confident in their writing abilities.

When to use this: This can be used for any student, it is a great resource for students that are not a confident in their reading abilities or speed of typing right and the student with the IEP who needs accommodations in having someone write for them or read to them.
Why we use it: This extension allows for a greater level of independence for your students while providing literacy support in knowledge and understanding, as well as expression and communication as it removes barriers from our students being able to express their thoughts or understand the content.
How to use is: This is a google extension, it needs to be downloaded on to your students google drive. Once it is on your google drive students will click their purple puzzle piece to open google read and write then can then click the symbol of the tool they want to use.
I would suggest going through the tutorial and information on the google link provided to fully understand how to use this tool.
Pros and cons to this Tech:
Pros: it is incredibly reliable for those who can use it. It is easy to use, it is available to use on more than just g-suite, it can help with websites content as well. It develops independence, students do not need to rely on someone else to help them.
Cons: although this is meant to help students who struggle to read and write the technology requires your student to be able to read and type/ navigate a computer with relative success. In order for students to know the tool did not type their sentence correctly the student has to be able to recognize the word is wrong,or re listen to their writing ( this takes time). However, if you pronunciation is different or you have speech and language impairments google speech to text will not be able to accurately pick up on your dialect. This can make this extension unable to use for a large audience that needs this level of assistance as it has a particular way you need to speak, annunciate and rate of speech for the tool to work correctly. these can be very frustrating challenges for some students.

Visual Checklist: RAFT

RAFT (or Role, Audience, For,, Topic), is a writing strategy that helps students understand their role as the writer during a written task. Students will be prompted to think about the audience they will address, the different formats of writing and the topic they choose to write about.
When To Use It: Educators can use RAFT when they are engaging their students in a method of instruction. It can also be used to support students in reflection and goal setting during an 'AS' learning opportunity.
Why We Use It: This allows teachers to encourage students to write creatively while using a different perspective. Students also gain practice in writing for various topics.
How To Use It:

Display a completed RAFT example on the overhead.

Describe each of these using simple examples: role, audience, format, and topic. (It may be helpful to write the elements on chart paper or a bulletin board for future reference).

Model how to write responses to the prompts, and discuss the key elements as a class. Teachers should keep this as simple and concise as possible for younger students.

Have students practice responding to prompts individually, or in small groups. At first, it may be best to have all students react to the same prompt so the class can learn from varied responses.

(Reading Rockets, RAFT. 2019)
