A moment that stood out to me from this book was the fact that Frank lied again after he said he was gonna start telling the truth. This stood out to me because when Frank's dad fought and went to the hospital, Brit texted Frank and he didn’t tell Brit what happened but kinda ignored her, but Frank told Q, so why can’t Brit know, Like what. After times past they meet and Brit ask what happen to him and then Brit got upset because Frank did not tell her about his dad. But then Brit kinda forgive him, but said when you like someone you share everything. The thing is the fact that Frank did not tell Brit about the 'fake dating' Joy problem.

The author teaches us this because Frank's family hated other races because they weren't Korean. In the book, Frank's parents didn't acknowledge Hannah because she was dating a black man, Miles. When frank li’s parents disowned their daughter because she fell in love with a black boy. Even though she was an astonishing person. She did wonderful in school, Graduated from harvard WITH honors. They still makes it seem as if her falling in love with someone that doesn’t partake in her family’s tradition they disowned her.

This scene stood out to me the most because when Frank got the call from his mother informing him what happened to his father, he rushed to the hospital. Frank was really upset, and it confused him to see his parents joking around about a serious matter. They were laughing it off. He decided to call Joy and Q because he wanted his close friends to be there. He didn't want to lose his dad. This is where Frank realized he wants to build his relationship with his father and he can't take his family for granted. Even though his dad gives him a hard time and has expectations for Frank, he still loves him.

In this book, the Song and Li's family at first thought it would be easier for their kids to date Koreans thinking it will be easier. However, the families ended up turning against each other for the differences where the Song family is from a rich area and the Li family is from a not so rich area. They may both be Korean but that didn't change the fact that they're still different from each other.

I knew it was going to happen when Joy started to show off some bad signals. In this scene, I thought Frank Li was kind of being selfish since Joy already knew that it was the right decision for them to break up because of what was happening with their families. She was being the bigger person and Frank Li was only thinking about himself in that situation. It made me realize how he can be a little self-centered throughout the book.

It was wrong for him to kiss another girl (Joy) that he realized he was in love with, but he was still in a relationship. The way the breakup scene happened was completely immature since they're literally seniors in high school and it shouldn't have ended off that way. I'd want him to actually talk it out with her when she was ready instead of them never speaking to each other again.

The author taught this lesson by having Joy and Frank break up and distancing Franks relationship with his father. In the book, Frank mentions how he tries to get to know his dad more, but his dad doesn't say much. So, their conversations always ends with "Okay, dad." This distance between him and his parents makes Frank avoid talking to his parents about anything. In my opinion, parents should be the people taking initiative and trying to understand their children's 'mistakes', but in the book, Frank does more of the understanding towards his parents.

I understand the writer intent that he wanted Frank and his parents to bond a little towards the end of the story, however, I feel like it's unrealistic. I think there are other storylines that are a little less dramatic. Maybe he could've only included Frank's dad getting shot or only having cancer. Also, I really hate sad endings because the story somehow feels incomplete unless the main character is happy, but I understand that not all stories have to have happy endings.

The greatest lesson I learned from reading this book is to be more open toward those around you. For some teenagers, it may be difficult to be honest, and directly tell their parents how they feel or their opinions on a certain topic, question, etc. Frank Li experiences this as his parents are racist and when he calls them out, they say nothing but excuses or denial. I, myself, also struggle as I am aware that my parents would not understand or react similarly to Li's. However, as the story progresses, Yoon has Frank slowly open up to Brit, Joy, and others, who either do or put an effort to understand him but are not by any means rushing or ignoring him. Seeing this, I believe that being more open towards the right friends may possibly benefit our friendship and mentality.

In this case, those who are as the same race as I am. Even though it is better to communicate to one another, but because they are the same as I am, there are always competitions and that feeling of wanting and trying to be better than one another. The author taught me this lesson when Frank's and Joy's parents fight about who's wealthier than who and who's right and who's wrong. It made me realizes what's all the commotions and conflicts I have with the rest of my family is all about. Sometimes, because we are of the same race, it distance us, especially from the expectations that others put upon us.

(Yoon 215-216).

It stood out to me because it reveals how their parents are, and how Frank sees them as, because it might reveal Frank's fear of losing his parents, just like Hanna, after being disowned. Frank is also afraid to call out his parents because as he stated before, "Mom and dad are like this big ice wall of ignorance, and I'm just a lone soldier with a sword" (29). Additionally, it might relate to different kids who are afraid to call out their parents because it might be referred to as, "talking back".

Towards the end, he decides to leave his Tascam for someone else to hear. “I slow down and crane my neck to see if my Tascam is still there. But the Tascam is gone. I’m so happy to see it missing that I tear up. I’m grateful someone is listening to it right now” (Yoon 404). Why do you think he does that? Is there any symbolism of the Tascam?

The reason for this is because I feel like I didn't understand why all of a sudden Frank liked Joy while he was dating Brit, and how after so many years, they finally decided to like each other.
I just hope to change the speed of the story because there were several events happening all at once.

Post #1- The greatest lesson I learned from reading the book is that you should always treat with care and appreciate them no matter what kind of things you disagree with. The author helps teach this to me because when a lot of bad things are happening to Frank's father, he gets shot and also finds out he has cancer. Recently he and Frank haven't been able to see eye to eye because they both believe in different things. Frank failing to be able to make his parents proud due to him not always doing what they want causes their family to drift apart.

Due to Frank being raised in South Carolina he barely knows how to speak korean. Brits father was able to own that he was wrong and listen carefully while understanding. This stood out to me the most because not many adults admit when they're wrong.

The greatest lesson I learned from reading this book is that you should do what you want to do without letting someone's opinions impact your life. In the story, Frank wants to openly date Brit without having to hide her from his parents. However, he knows that his parents are going to disapprove of their relationship and might disown him like what happened to his sister. He hides Brit from them and comes up with a plan to fake date Joy to please his parents. He didn't want to do this but he had to to keep his relationship a secret. He's letting his parents' opinions on having to date a Korean girl impact him and this caused him to have a secret relationship with Brit and a fake relationship with Joy.

It's my first time seeing this kind of relationship between a child and his parents. Most children interact with their parents a lot. But with Frank, they don't really do much. In the story, when Frank started dating Brit or Joy, Frank kind of ignored Q. When Frank dated Joy and after their parents went against each other, Frank had to use Q as a shield to take Joy out. And when they were on a date, Frank totally forgot about Q. I think the author should make Frank a better friend.

If I were the publisher of this book, I would have suggested that the author modify the ending. This is a very powerful book that has done a great job of including real-world issues that can relate to almost all of its readers. However, it seems to me that Frank has been through so much that he deserves a happy ending. A large number of readers, including myself, may feel like something is missing after completing this book. As an editor, I would advise the author to include a happy ending that summarizes the book properly.
