I think outside of the assault, Marguerite's most significant moment takes place in the junkyard when she isolated herself from the world she once knew and identified herself as "Maya" to those around her. This was an important time for her to discover who she is and the kind of person she wanted to be - away from her family and away from the responsibilities that burdened her at this time.
-Mr. DeGuzman

Besides the rape, The moment in the story that changes Marguerite the most is when Dolores stabs her and Marguerite decides to run away. Marguerite recognizes that living with her father is neither working nor safe for her, and she decides to take matters into her own hands. I find this decision very responsible and adult-like because she doesn't let someone else decide her fate, unlike before.

Besides the rape, The moment in the story that changed Maya the most is when she attended her graduation ceremonies. She realized how cruel the world really is and why she has to enjoy life while she can. The speaker was very racist without even knowing, and this showed Maya how ignorant people can be. Maya's view on life changed after that night, because she finally woke up to see what the world is really like.
