During prophase, chromosomes condense and attach to spindle fibers, which pull one copy of each chromosome to opposite sides of the cell. This process maintains the total number of chromosomes in the daughter cells.

This process involves two sets of divisions, resulting in four haploid daughter cells that are genetically unique. The first division produces two cells with two sets of chromosomes, similar to Mitosis. During the second division, genetic information is not copied again, resulting in four cells with one set of chromosomes each. The first prophase of Meiosis is also longer than mitotic prophase, and homologous chromosomes exchange DNA sections through a process called "crossing over". This crossing over, along with the random orientation of homologous pairs in Metaphase 1, results in daughter cells with different genetic combinations.
