According to Child Mind Institute (2021), the most common actions of OCD in children are:

-Frequent requests to go to the bathroom: This may be an attempt for the student to wash their hands with they were around a student that sneezed or coughed. In addition, the child could be doing this to cleanse items or supplies.

-Constant reassurance-seeking: This could be through asking several of the same question to ensure they have done things correctly. This might look like a child checking things very repetitively.

-Getting stuck on tasks: A child with OCD may feel the need to complete something entirely prior to being able to move on. In school, this may look like a child being unable to move on to the next part of the lesson because they are stuck on a portion of the assignment.

-Retracing: A child may need to return to a room or classroom if they feel like they forget something or had a bad feeling upon exiting the room. This could look like the child going back through the door and saying something positive or exiting the room the "right way".

-Obsessive erasing: If a child is writing, you may see them erase a lot to make sure everything is perfect and looks right. If there is a word the child feels negatively about or that is associated with a fear, they child may need to erase it.

References:
Child Mind Institute.

According to Wertlieb (2008), the behavioral approach called ritual prevention was shown to work well for patients with OCD. This practice was proven to be psychologically strenuous but with the greatest outcome of breaking the rituals. Restrictions would be placed that would prevent patients from doing these rituals, like turning off the water in a room to prevent obsessively washing hands, and the restriction would be gradually lifted, ultimately ending the rituals.

In addition Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can also be utilized to end ritualistic behaviors. Some places that utilize CBT are as follows:

-Millenial Life Counseling
Address: 6750 Hillcrest Plaza Dr #224, Dallas, TX 75230

Phone: (214) 504-1512
Website: https://www.millenniallifecounseling.com/

-Peace Lane Therapy
Address: 8216 Irish Dr, Fort Worth, TX 76180

Phone: (817) 677-0726
Website: https://peacelanetherapy.com/

-Hope Renewed Counseling
Address: 7920 Glenview Dr, Richland Hills, TX 76180

Phone: (817) 618-3489

Website: https://peacelanetherapy.com/

Wertlieb, E.
