In elementary and middle school, I had undiagnosed dyslexia and ADHD. I struggled with reading, writing, and spelling. Growing up, I knew something was off. All throughout elementary school, I was constantly being pulled out for one-on-one or small group language art interventions. I was given different spelling tests, readings, and assignments. I had no idea what was going on, as I was not diagnosed with dyslexia or ADHD yet. It left me feeling alienated, insecure, and stuck in a strange grey area. However, my comprehension skills and passion for reading and writing continued to blossom, despite the academic discouragement. My parents were aware of my academic struggles, despite the school district ignoring the severity. So, my parents decided to implement Orton-Gillingham tutoring on their own dime. In seventh grade, my parents got me tested by a psychologist, which led to the diagnosis of ADHD and dyslexia. Finally, I qualified for an IEP and received the right support and accommodations. In high school, my passion for reading and writing grew. I felt supported and more confident in my academic abilities. Throughout high school, I took standard, on level, English classes. Senior year, I had the most impactful English teacher. She saw my passion for writing and reading and engaged that through multimodal texts and meaningful content. We watched films, created short movies, and implemented projects centered around self-expression. We read iconic coming-of-age novels while incorporating relevant novels for us soon-to-be high-school graduating seniors. She genuinely listened to us, and gave us constructive feedback on writing, while supporting and challenging us when applicable. I always knew I had a passion for reading and writing, but having a teacher see that passion and build on it, what a gift. To this day, I absolutely love reading and writing.
