1 Attendee.
Provided insight into trialling “assessment as a learning activity”. Students were given a summative assessment task to complete in class that contributed to their final grade.

Students were progressively provided with model answers and self-marked the knowledge test. As they progressed through the marking they were provided with feedback which also encouraged group discussions around the answers and allowed students to seek clarification as to the correct answer where necessary. Therefore there was a formative/diagnostic assessment element integrated into the learning activity.

General discussion around content covered in Live Classroom 3 on active learning, including recycling previous activities & resources and the learning activities design template.

6 Attendees
A number of interesting discussions including:
How do we engage students in active learning when they are used to and expect lecturers to give them the information while they passively sit back? Related to this was a first year unit that involved a lot of mundane work which provided useful skills in further years, but was dull by itself. We looked at a number of resources, & strategies; talked about gamifying, sticking with it until students get used to the process & showing the students the rationale behind doing the activities.
Discussion about the modes of delivery and that even 'attendance' based units can include a lot of blended approaches. (See links to both "Blended learning and study modes" & "Checklist for the Minimum Use of LEO", below).
How to deal with troublesome individuals and groups that to varying degrees just won't engage in group work.

We reviewed the following resources during our session (click the links to open):
"Blended learning and Study Modes"
"Checklist for the Minimum Use of LEO"
