In your “theme” padlet, if applicable, you will need to define your terms. As you read throughout the novel, chapter by chapter, you will find quotes that support your theme. (If a chapter does not mention the theme, you still need to state that on the padlet.) Along with the quote, make sure you put the page number, chapter, and then explain how your quote connects to the theme. As you go along through the novel, ask yourself what Huxley is warning through these themes? Does he believe society should be controlled by technology?

Happiness is a huge topic in Brave New World. It is the governments number one priority due to the fact that if the citizens are not happy, the overall stability of the population could come crashing down.
In Brave New World the government does everything in its power to ensure everyone is content and happy. They condition people for the job they are going to have for their whole life to ensure that they will always be happy with if and never begin to resent their job or want something else. "That is the secret of happiness and virtue -- liking what you've got to do. All conditioning aims at that: making people like their inescapable social destiny" is how the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning puts things in chapter one.

I think that soma should be considered one of the governments saving graces. When someone starts to feel down even a tiny bit, soma the miracle drug can make them instantly feel better. Thus allowing the government to not worry about said citizen.
"Why you don't take Soma when yo have these dreadful ideas of yours. You'd forget all about them. And instead of feeling miserable, you'd be jolly. So jolly." page 89

They make sex and orgies as moral and ethical so that no one will have to go through heartbreak or intense longing for someone so that the government keeps control.
"Two children, a little boy about seven and a little girl who might have been a bit older... were playing a rudimentary sexual game." page 38
