The teacher talk that motivated me the most was with my Grade 11 Media Studies teacher, Ms. G. She truly believed in me and encouraged me to stop doing just the bare minimum. She told me I had so much potential and that I shouldn’t waste it. Her words really stuck with me and pushed me to think about my future in a different way. She’s the reason I started considering teaching as a career, and I’ll always be grateful for her support and belief in me.

When I was training to be a lifeguard, my coach was a person who inspired me. Throughout the training, we had to partake in many different physical tests and written tests that I found very challenging. This is when my teacher gave me a pep talk stating how with a positive mindset you can do anything. This inspired me to attain a growth mindset where I look towards growing, learning, building and trying my best on my journey without the final outcome in mind. I have taken these words of wisdom through any challenging part of my life that requires me to take a step back and focus on my personal learning and growth.

One teacher talk that motivated me to speak with confidence was my Grade 11 Anthropology/Psychology/Sociology teacher. We would have weekly article reflections and students were invited to share their thoughts on the article, as well as to challenge things said in the article. Often, I would begin my debate, then stop midway and say "Nevermind, it's okay." On one occasion, Ms. R took me aside and told me I had really great and powerful points to make, but those points only come with power if I give them the power. The way she spoke to me was motivating and she pushed me to develop confidence in what and how I spoke in the class. To this day, I always think about what she said, and I remember that any time I am making a critical point in conversation.

Funny enough, Ms. R's nephew is now in the class I mentor for placement! AND my mentor teacher taught Ms. R! What a coincidence.

For me, much of the "Teacher Talk" didn't serve as motivation; instead, it often added to the pressure I was already feeling. Many teachers seemed to expect instant transformation after a few encouraging words, but that approach rarely worked for me. I now realize that the motivational speeches were ineffective because they overlooked the struggles I was actually facing. Instead of addressing the challenges I needed help with, the focus was placed solely on staying positive, leaving the core issues unaddressed.

In grade 7, I moved to a new town and was attending a brand new school. I was nervous about making new friends and gettting involved in extracurriculars. When I met Mrs. T, her gentle smile and kind words left a lasting impression. Mrs. T helped me get involved in extracurriculars. She supported my interests/passions and helped me make the right connections to succeed in my goals. Every interaction with Mrs. T was like a breath of fresh air. I should mention that Mrs. T was the teacher librarian! When I think about why i want to become a teacher, a big reason is Mrs. T :)

A teacher talk that motivated me was with my Grade 12 English teacher. He told me I was capable of achieving great things. At the time, I often used humour to cope with stress and feelings of inadequacy about my future. He reminded me never to give up, and his words have stayed with me ever since. Since graduation, I have kept in contact with him. His teaching pedagogy and relationship with his students are a big reason why I want to move up to be a high school teacher.

The teacher talk that motivated me during my schooling was definitely "Yes, you can!" and "If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, and try again." These phrases always made me feel like no challenge was too big and that persistence would lead to success. The phrase "Yes, you can!" was especially powerful because it was a simple yet empowering affirmation that encouraged me to believe in my own abilities, even when things seemed difficult. It instilled a sense of confidence and reminded me that I was capable of overcoming obstacles, no matter how daunting they appeared at first.

Similarly, "If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, and try again" became a mantra for me in situations where I struggled or made mistakes. It emphasized that failure was not the end but rather a step in the learning process. This mindset helped me embrace challenges, as I knew I could keep improving with persistence. Now, using these phrases with my students feels natural because I understand firsthand how motivating and reassuring they can be. It’s amazing to see how they resonate with students, giving them the confidence to keep going, especially when they feel like giving up.
