In the realm of modern healthcare, understanding diverse cultural backgrounds is paramount. Domain 7 of the Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice standards underscores the importance of self-awareness regarding our culture, beliefs, values, and biases.

To meet this standard, I regularly self-reflect, exploring my heritage and acknowledging how it influences my approach to healthcare.

In practice, I will create a safe space for patients to share their cultural values and traditions, tailoring care plans to respect their beliefs. Recognising and addressing biases, I will seek ongoing feedback and support to grow as a culturally responsive and inclusive future Registered Nurse.

Embracing Domain 7, Standard 12.1, has enriched my nursing practice; through self-awareness and continuous learning, I will provide respectful, inclusive, and culturally competent care. This will benefit my future patients and foster a more inclusive healthcare environment.

Navigating Social Determinants: Migrant and Refugee Health in Australia

Income and Social Protection:

Income stability and access to social protection play a pivotal role in shaping the health outcomes of migrants and refugees in Australia. Economic security is crucial for individuals and families to afford nutritious food, safe housing, and quality healthcare. However, many migrants face initial challenges in finding stable employment, often leading to financial strain.

Education:

Education is a powerful determinant of health, influencing factors such as employment opportunities, income, and health literacy. For migrants and refugees, access to quality education is essential for successful integration into Australian society. The Australian Human Rights Commission emphasises the importance of language support for migrants, as it directly impacts their ability to understand health information and communicate effectively with healthcare providers (AHRC, 2021).

Housing, Basic Amenities, and the Environment:

Adequate housing is a fundamental component of health and well-being. For migrants and refugees in Australia, the quality and accessibility of housing can significantly impact their health outcomes. Overcrowded or substandard housing conditions can lead to increased risks of infectious diseases and mental health issues (Phillimore, 2019).

Additionally, the environment in which individuals live plays a role in overall health. Access to green spaces and safe neighbourhoods fosters physical activity and mental well-being.

World Health Organization.

1. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD):

Syrian refugees are likely to present with symptoms of PTSD, given the traumatic experiences endured during the conflict, including bombings, displacement, and loss of loved ones.

Treatment Option: Trauma-Informed Therapy

Trauma-informed therapy provides a safe and supportive space for refugees to process their experiences. Techniques like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) have demonstrated effectiveness in treating PTSD (Steel et al., 2009).

2. Infectious Diseases:

Refugees from Syria may arrive with a higher prevalence of infectious diseases due to disrupted healthcare access during the conflict and limited resources in refugee camps.

Treatment Option: Comprehensive Screening and Timely Interventions

Thorough medical assessments, including screenings for tuberculosis, hepatitis, and other infectious diseases, are crucial. Following WHO guidelines, early detection and appropriate treatment can mitigate the spread of these infections (World Health Organization, 2012).

3. Malnutrition and Micronutrient Deficiencies:

Syrian refugees may face malnutrition and deficiencies in essential nutrients stemming from disrupted food supplies and limited access to balanced diets.

Treatment Option: Nutritional Support and Education

Providing refugees with access to diverse, nutritious foods is essential.

"I Am Australian" by The Seekers is important to Australian culture for a few key reasons. First, its lyrics celebrate the diversity of Australia and how people from all over the world call it home. This really hits home in a country known for its mix of cultures. The song also reminds us of the history, challenges, and victories that have shaped the nation. It's like a national anthem, often sung at significant events, bringing people together and making them feel part of something bigger. Overall, "I Am Australian" is a song that brings out the Aussie spirit, showing that no matter where you're from, you can be a part of this fantastic country.
