In this piece I observed or drew connections to the following:
(a) New Learning: In "Room to Breathe" students eventually came around to the idea of mindfulness, but it was extremely gradual. ( I am always hopeful that new strategies with be implemented painlessly and will be fully effective immediately. This is not the case here.)
(b) Connections to Brain 101: The adolescent brain is singular: decision making is connected inextricably to the amygdala. The amygdala is emotion, impulse, aggression and instinct. They amygdala is in overdrive for this part of development. Students in this video are as impulsive as I've seen.
Implications to school: "The defiance is so deliberate and I don't know if I can work with that in this big a group." This group of kids really made me think of my 5th graders at OGES. The students change over time with a mindfulness practice, but not without their teacher "hitting a brick wall" first.

In this piece I observed or drew connections to the following:
(a) New Learning: Mindfulness as a way of assisting students with regulating. This would perhaps save some trips to the nurse and keep kids in the classroom longer when something is not comfortable but must be endured as a part of the school day.
-
(b) Connections to Brain 101: At early ages the brain is more plastic -- what better time to practice mindfulness skills than kindergarten, for example? We could be arming students with another learning tool.
-
(c) Implications to school:
- "Mindfulness without heartfulness is incomplete; heartfulness without mindfulness is incomplete." The idea of kindness and mindfulnessbeing integral with learning and that there is a symbiotic relationship there that is rooted in the brain. Makes me think of OGES and TPS's "Brain Power, Heart Power, Body Power." In that initiative, FCPS is heading in the right direction. Also makes me think of the Rainbow Project at Tufts.
