This stop was selected because the New Immigrants played a big role in Progressive America. They came here looking for better jobs with better pay and better living conditions. They called for these things and created unions which demanded these conditions. While benefiting themselves they also helped to better America by introducing unions to the U.S.

The supreme court was selected as the next stop to talk about the Plessy V. Ferguson case. In 1890, Louisiana Passed a separate car act which segregated railroad cars for blacks and whites. to test this law Homer A. Plessy, a one-eighth African American shoemaker boarded a white car in Louisiana. He was detained and charged for violating the Louisiana statue. The case went to the Supreme court and it was ruled that the law didn't violate the 14th amendment because even though they were segregated, they were still treated equal. This ruling allowed the JIm Crow laws to come into effect.

Our next stop is Haymarket Square in Chicago, Illinois. On May 4,1886, A labor protest turned into a riot after someone threw a bomb at the police. This riot was a major set back for the labor movement in America. It also made the public assume that unions are associated with anarchism, violence, strikes, and radicalism and made it take longer for more unions to form to protect workers in the U.S

Today while you eat we have a very special guest speaker for you. The 26th President of the United States of America Theodore Roosevelt. We chose him because of his contributions to the Progressive and Industrial era in the U.S. He will make the points that the Progressive Era was a success because of the things he accomplished. One being that he enforced the Sherman anti-trust act on companies which made it better for smaller businesses. Also because of the environment advances like national parks and such. Finally, he says that his advances in workers and company rights was a success.

Upton Sinclair wrote about the terrible conditions at the Stockyard more specifically the meat packing industry. He wrote about how terrible the working conditions were for the worker and also the sanitary problems. He said that men would get their fingers chopped up and put into the meat and also that one man actually fell into one of the vats and was turned into lard. This book made the country see what was going into their meat and that caused government organizations to be created like the FDA.
