Doctors Without Borders had been working in Haiti for 19 years prior to to the earthquake, providing a wide range of medical care. From this long term involvement, the organization knew that the country wasn't prepared to deal with the medical consequences of a natural disaster like this one. After the earthquake destroyed 60% of the existing health facilities, MSF had to relocate services to other facilities, build container hospitals, and work under temporary shelters. MSF managed 19 health facilities and over 1000 beds available at various locations and provided emergency care to more than 173,000 patients.
